Iran’s intelligence ministry has arrested 97 individuals accused of being “soldiers of Israel,” according to state media reports released Thursday. This marks the latest development in an extensive security operation that has seen hundreds detained over alleged connections to Israel and the United States since the outbreak of the current regional conflict.

The wave of arrests extends beyond these 97 individuals. State media also cited the police commander of Alborz province as confirming the detention of 41 additional people accused of sending videos to opposition media channels based outside Iran. This follows a March 10 announcement from Iran’s intelligence ministry that it had arrested a foreign national along with 30 other people described as spies, internal mercenaries, and operational agents working for Israel and the United States.

These arrests come in the aftermath of the assassination of Iran’s intelligence minister, Esmaeil Khatib, in a targeted Israeli strike in Tehran. Khatib’s death was confirmed on March 18 by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, approximately ten days after the launch of two military operations targeting the Iranian regime: Operation Epic Fury and Operation Roaring Lion.

Under Khatib’s leadership, the intelligence ministry had significantly expanded its scope and influence within Iran. The ministry now maintains extensive informant networks across various sectors of Iranian society, including universities, media organizations, minority communities, and activist circles throughout the country. Its agents are tasked with identifying protest organizers, monitoring communications, and conducting interrogations, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The current crackdown appears to be part of a broader internal security campaign. On March 12, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that Iranian authorities had detained nearly 200 people on charges related to what Iran characterizes as the “U.S.-Israeli war against the Islamic Republic.”

The charges against those arrested include a range of alleged activities, from social media posts and sharing content with foreign media outlets to espionage and disturbing public order. HRANA stated that its tally was based on official reports from Iranian authorities.

This security sweep reflects escalating tensions in the region, particularly following Israel’s military operations targeting Iranian infrastructure and leadership. The assassination of Khatib represents one of the most high-profile attacks on Iranian leadership in recent years, likely contributing to the regime’s intensified internal security measures.

The arrests also highlight Iran’s ongoing concerns about internal dissent and perceived foreign influence, especially during a period of heightened regional conflict. The Iranian government has historically responded to external pressure with increased domestic surveillance and crackdowns on those suspected of foreign ties.

The targeting of individuals allegedly sending videos to opposition media channels based abroad suggests that the Iranian regime is particularly sensitive to information leaving the country during this period of increased international scrutiny.

Human rights organizations have previously expressed concerns about Iran’s use of broad espionage and national security charges to suppress dissent and limit freedom of expression. These recent arrests will likely draw further international attention to Iran’s human rights record and its treatment of those accused of connections to foreign entities.

As regional tensions continue to escalate, Iran’s internal security measures appear to be intensifying in parallel, reflecting the regime’s determination to maintain control during a period of significant external pressure and internal challenges.
