At least 18 people have died and 34 remain missing after two separate landslides struck Indonesia’s Java island in recent days, as rescue teams continue their desperate search through mud and debris.

In Cilacap district of Central Java province, the death toll has risen to 16 following landslides triggered by torrential rains last Thursday evening. The disaster struck dozens of homes across three villages, according to Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

More than 500 rescue personnel, including police and military forces, have been deployed to the affected areas in Cilacap. The search operation, now in its fifth day, includes 22 excavators and 18 sniffer dogs working across five devastated locations as teams search for seven people still reported missing.

A second deadly landslide hit Central Java’s Banjarnegara district on Saturday evening when tons of mud cascaded down surrounding hills, burying at least 30 houses. The disaster forced more than 800 residents to flee to safety, with some seeking refuge on even higher ground that authorities warn may also be prone to landslides.

“Rescuers on Monday retrieved at least two bodies from devastated areas in Banjarnegara and were searching for 27 people reported missing,” Muhari said in a statement. Local officials are struggling to evacuate dozens of residents who fled to vulnerable hillsides, attempting to relocate them to safer government shelters.

The BNPB has initiated a weather modification operation to support rescue efforts in both affected districts. An aircraft carrying three tons of seeding material began operations Sunday in an attempt to stabilize weather conditions and prevent further rainfall that could hamper search efforts.

“The aim of modifying the weather is to redirect the rain elsewhere and keep the search operation free of downpours, which could hamper the rescuers’ progress,” Muhari explained. Cloud seeding involves dispersing particles into clouds to create precipitation in targeted areas while reducing rainfall in critical zones.

Images released by the disaster agency reveal a landscape transformed by the disasters. Once-verdant terraced rice fields now lie buried under murky brown mud, while villages are covered by a thick layer of debris, rocks, and uprooted trees. Rescue teams can be seen digging frantically through the mud with both hand tools and heavy machinery.

These twin disasters highlight Indonesia’s vulnerability to climate-related catastrophes. The archipelago nation, comprising over 17,000 islands, experiences frequent landslides and floods during its rainy season, which typically runs from November to April. The country’s topography, with millions living in mountainous areas or fertile flood plains, increases the population’s exposure to such hazards.

Environmental experts have previously warned that deforestation and land-use changes in Indonesia’s upland areas have exacerbated the risk of landslides. The removal of deep-rooted vegetation that once stabilized hillsides has made many communities more vulnerable to disaster during heavy rainfall.

The Indonesian government has faced growing pressure to improve disaster preparedness and response capabilities as climate change threatens to intensify extreme weather events across the Southeast Asian nation. The BNPB has worked to enhance early warning systems in recent years, but the challenging geography and widespread nature of settlements make comprehensive protection difficult.

As rescue operations continue in both Cilacap and Banjarnegara districts, authorities are also working to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to hundreds of displaced survivors who have lost homes and livelihoods in the disasters.
