Indonesian rescuers recover third body from tour boat sinking

Indonesian authorities recovered a third body Tuesday from a tourist boat that sank during a Christmas holiday excursion, as the search continues for two missing sons of a Spanish soccer coach, officials confirmed.

The body was discovered near Pede beach after local fishermen spotted wreckage approximately 14 kilometers (8.6 miles) from the original sinking site, according to Fathur Rahman, who heads the Maumere Search and Rescue Office.

The tragedy struck on December 26 when a tour boat carrying Valencia CF Women’s B coach Fernando Martín, 44, his wife, their four children, four crew members, and a local guide experienced engine failure and sank in waters near Indonesia’s Komodo National Park, a popular tourist destination known for its unique wildlife and natural beauty.

In the hours following the accident, rescue teams managed to save Martín’s wife and one child, along with all four crew members and the guide. However, the disaster has now claimed three lives from the Spanish family, with two of Martín’s sons still unaccounted for as search operations continue.

The bodies of Martín and his daughter were cremated Monday in Bali following the family’s wishes, explained East Nusa Tenggara Police spokesperson Ariasandy, who like many Indonesians uses a single name. The decision to cremate was partly due to limited mortuary space in Labuan Bajo, the gateway city to Komodo National Park.

Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1980, is one of Indonesia’s premier tourist attractions. The protected area spans several islands and is famous for being home to the Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard. The park draws thousands of visitors annually who come to experience its unique biodiversity and stunning marine environments.

Valencia CF, the Spanish soccer club where Martín coaches, has expressed its profound sorrow over the tragedy. The club issued statements of support for the family and is working with Spanish authorities to provide assistance during this difficult time.

Maritime accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, an archipelago nation comprising more than 17,000 islands where boats serve as a primary form of transportation for both locals and tourists. The country has struggled with enforcing maritime safety regulations, with incidents often attributed to overcrowding, inadequate safety equipment, and vessels operating in poor weather conditions.
