In the wake of a devastating fire that tore through a Swiss Alpine bar on New Year’s Eve, survivors, officials, and community members have shared harrowing accounts of the tragedy that claimed 40 lives and injured 119 others.

The blaze erupted early Thursday at Le Constellation bar in the popular ski resort of Crans-Montana, marking one of the deadliest incidents in Switzerland’s modern history. Investigators revealed Friday that sparkling candles atop Champagne bottles likely ignited the fire when they came too close to the ceiling of the crowded establishment.

The multilingual nature of Switzerland was evident as people spoke about the disaster in French, Italian, German, and English, reflecting the country’s diverse cultural fabric.

Among those desperately seeking information was Laetitia Brodard, mother of 16-year-old Arthur, who told reporters in Crans-Montana, “I’m looking everywhere. The body of my son is somewhere. I want to know where my child is and be by his side. Wherever that may be, be it in the intensive care unit or the morgue.”

The tragedy prompted immediate acts of heroism from local residents and visitors alike. Marc-Antoine Chavanon, just 14 years old, rushed to assist victims. “We were bringing people out, people were collapsing. We were doing everything we could to save them,” he recounted. “We saw people screaming, running. There was one of our friends: She was struggling to get out, she was all burned. You can’t imagine the pain I saw.”

Swiss teenager Gianni Campolo, who was vacationing in the area, summed up the horrific scene simply: “I have seen horror, and I don’t know what else would be worse than this.”

His father, Paolo Campolo, described finding an emergency exit behind the bar and working with another volunteer to rescue victims. “Despite the heavy smoke, I could see bodies pressed against the glass,” he said. “That’s when several bodies fell. We immediately pulled them out, one after the other. I think we had to pull out about ten bodies in total.”

Eric Bonvin, general director of the regional hospital in Sion that received dozens of injured people, highlighted the widespread community impact. “It was hard to live through for everyone. Also, probably because everyone was asking themselves, ‘Was my child, my cousin, someone from the region at this party?'” he explained. “This place was very well known as somewhere to celebrate the new year. Also, seeing young people arrive — that’s always traumatic.”

Authorities are now focused on identifying victims to provide closure for grieving families. Beatrice Pilloud, the Valais region’s attorney general, emphasized this priority during a Friday news conference in Sion: “The priority today is truly placed on identification, in order to allow the families to begin their mourning.”

The tragedy has drawn international attention and sympathy. Pope Leo sent a telegram to the bishop of Sion expressing his “compassion and concern to the relatives of the victims” and praying that “the Lord will welcome the deceased into His abode of peace and light, and will sustain the courage of those who suffer in their hearts or in their bodies.”

Cantonal head of government Mathias Reynard praised the immediate community response, telling RTS radio: “We have numerous accounts of heroic actions, one could say of very strong solidarity in the moment. In the first minutes, it was citizens — and in large part young people — who saved lives with their courage.”

On his first day in office, Swiss President Guy Parmelin reflected on the national character in the face of tragedy: “Switzerland is a strong country not because it is sheltered from drama, but because it knows how to face them with courage and a spirit of mutual help.”

The fire at Le Constellation represents Switzerland’s worst such disaster in decades and comes as a profound shock to the upscale mountain resort community of Crans-Montana, known primarily as a destination for skiing and luxury tourism in the Swiss Alps.
