Nigerian authorities have uncovered a large-scale organ harvesting operation following weeks of covert surveillance, revealing a disturbing criminal network that allegedly kidnapped victims from a hotel before harvesting their organs at a nearby mortuary.

The Imo State Police Command launched its investigation after numerous reports of kidnappings near a hotel and mortuary in Ngor Okpala. Through intelligence-led operations, authorities identified the suspected ringleader as High Chief Stanley Oparaugo, also known as “Morocco,” who remains at large and is now wanted by police.

According to investigators, Oparaugo is the owner of both the Jessy Best Hotel in Ihitte Okwe and a nearby mortuary facility known as Ugwudi. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye detailed the operation’s grim methodology in a statement shared on social media.

“Victims were lured to the hotel before being robbed and abducted, with families forced to pay ransom,” Okoye said. “Some people who paid never saw their loved ones again.”

The command alleges that after abduction, victims were transported from the hotel to the mortuary where they were killed and their organs harvested for sale on the black market. When authorities raided the premises, they found the hotel abandoned, but made a gruesome discovery at the mortuary.

“At the mortuary, decomposed and mutilated corpses were discovered in unhygienic conditions, raising suspicions of illegal organ-harvesting activities,” Okoye stated. Police report finding more than 100 bodies at the facility, many showing signs of organ removal.

Forensic teams are currently processing evidence recovered from both sites as well as from the suspect’s residence, where officials say they found “crucial exhibits” that will aid in the ongoing investigation.

The illegal organ trade represents a growing global criminal enterprise, with vulnerable populations in developing nations often targeted by traffickers. According to the World Health Organization, thousands of organs are illegally obtained and transplanted annually, generating millions in illicit profits for criminal organizations.

The case highlights Nigeria’s broader security challenges, as the West African nation continues to struggle with various forms of organized crime, including kidnapping for ransom, which has become increasingly common across several states.

“Maximum security has been deployed along the Owerri–Aba Expressway. The Command assures travelers during the holidays of its commitment to their safety,” Okoye added, addressing public concerns about safety in the region.

This discovery comes amid a series of high-profile abductions throughout Nigeria. Recently, the government secured the release of 100 schoolchildren who were kidnapped from St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Niger state, on November 21. Such incidents have contributed to growing concerns about public safety in the country.

The targeting of vulnerable populations has drawn international attention to Nigeria’s security situation. Earlier this year, the United States designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” due to ongoing religious persecution, particularly affecting Christian communities.

Human rights organizations have long called for stronger action against trafficking networks in West Africa, where porous borders and limited law enforcement resources create opportunities for criminal enterprises to flourish.

Authorities have urged citizens with information about Oparaugo’s whereabouts to come forward as the investigation continues. The Imo State Police Command has vowed to dismantle the entire network and bring all perpetrators to justice.

As forensic examinations continue, police are working to identify the recovered remains and contact families who may have lost loved ones to this criminal operation.
