A massive fire devastated the iconic Vjesnik tower in downtown Zagreb overnight, leaving the once-prominent skyscraper severely damaged but fortunately causing no casualties.

The blaze erupted near the top of the 16-story building shortly before midnight Monday and rapidly spread downward through the structure, according to local media reports. The intensity of the fire prevented approximately 100 firefighters from entering the building, forcing them to battle the flames from outside.

By midday Tuesday, firefighters had largely extinguished the main fire, though the metal and concrete structure continued to smolder. Emergency responders confirmed that the building was almost completely vacant when the fire broke out, which helped prevent potential injuries or fatalities.

“From what I saw on site and inside the building, the damage is unfortunately total,” Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic said after visiting the scene. “But I believe that the state and other owners will start the renovation of the building in this prominent location of our city as soon as possible.”

The tower, a significant architectural landmark in Croatia’s capital, was named after the popular newspaper Vjesnik, which occupied the building until approximately 12 years ago. Since then, the building has housed various businesses and offices, though many spaces reportedly remained vacant.

According to the Index news portal, the fire appears to have spread rapidly through the building’s ventilation shafts, allowing it to consume multiple floors quickly. Witnesses reported seeing pieces of the facade falling from the burning structure as the fire progressed, creating additional hazards for emergency responders on the ground.

The Vjesnik tower has long been a distinctive part of Zagreb’s skyline and represents an important piece of the city’s post-war architectural heritage. Built during Yugoslavia’s modernist period, it served as a hub for media and communications for decades. The newspaper Vjesnik, which gave the tower its name, was one of Croatia’s most influential publications before ceasing operations amid changing media landscapes.

Fire safety officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze, though a comprehensive investigation is expected to begin once the structure has fully cooled and engineers can assess its structural integrity.

The destruction of this landmark building raises important questions about the preservation of Zagreb’s architectural heritage and urban planning. The city has faced challenges in recent years maintaining and repurposing some of its older commercial structures as businesses relocate to newer developments.

Mayor Tomasevic’s comments suggest that reconstruction efforts will be a priority, though questions remain about funding sources and whether the building will retain its historical character or undergo a more contemporary redesign.

The fire comes as Zagreb continues recovery efforts from a significant earthquake that damaged numerous buildings in the city center in March 2020, putting additional strain on urban planning and historic preservation resources.

Local business associations have expressed concern about the economic impact on neighboring establishments, as the area around the tower may face restricted access during cleanup and potential reconstruction efforts.

City officials have indicated they will work with structural engineers in the coming days to determine whether portions of the building can be salvaged or if complete demolition will be necessary before any rebuilding can commence.
