Swiss Hospital Confronts Unprecedented Challenge After New Year’s Eve Bar Fire

The regional hospital in Sion, Switzerland, typically handles emergencies involving winter sports enthusiasts injured on Alpine slopes. But as 2024 began, medical staff faced an overwhelming influx of young burn victims from a devastating New Year’s Eve fire at Le Constellation bar in nearby Crans-Montana.

“It’s a very particular situation because at the beginning burns are not necessarily apparent, the nerve endings are burnt so feelings are lost and the person is most of all in a state of shock,” explained Eric Bonvin, general director of the Sion hospital, in an interview with The Associated Press. “At those moments, every minute counts.”

The victims, primarily teenagers and young adults averaging around 20 years old, arrived with varying degrees of burns. Many suffered not only external burns but also severe internal damage to their airways from inhaling smoke and extreme heat.

“There were inhalations of both smoke and also of heat that for some probably led to internal burns. That’s a really catastrophic situation, as you can imagine,” Bonvin said.

According to Bonvin, 55 gravely injured people were rushed to the hospital via medical transports, while additional victims arrived independently or were brought by friends and family. The sheer volume of patients immediately strained the facility’s resources, particularly challenging since the hospital does not have a specialized burn unit.

The emergency response was bolstered by off-duty medical personnel who voluntarily reported to work after hearing about the disaster. “Many people came spontaneously, even those who were on holiday or having a night out,” Bonvin noted. “That worked well.”

Though the hospital was already operating with increased staffing due to the typical surge of winter tourism emergencies in the region, all surgical operating rooms were quickly activated, and intensive care facilities reached capacity. By Friday afternoon, most victims had been transferred to other medical facilities with specialized burn treatment capabilities, while others with less severe injuries were discharged.

The Valais region, home to popular ski resorts including Crans-Montana, typically sees its population double during the holiday season. “Every year it’s a period of intense stress for our emergency unit,” Bonvin explained, but the scale of the New Year’s Eve disaster presented unprecedented challenges.

The emotional toll on medical staff was compounded by uncertainty about who might be among the injured. “It was hard to live through for everyone. Also probably because everyone was asking themselves, ‘Was my child, my cousin, someone from the region at this party?'” Bonvin said. “This place was very well known as somewhere to celebrate the new year.”

Le Constellation bar, a popular nightspot in the upscale mountain resort of Crans-Montana, was packed with revelers when the fire broke out during New Year’s celebrations. Survivors have described harrowing scenes of fellow partygoers struggling to escape the rapidly spreading flames.

Swiss authorities continue to investigate the cause of the blaze, which represents one of the country’s worst nightclub disasters in recent memory. The incident has prompted renewed discussions about fire safety regulations in entertainment venues across Switzerland.

For those most severely affected, the road to recovery will be lengthy. “For those with serious burns, intensive care treatment lasts several months,” Bonvin cautioned. However, he expressed cautious optimism about their prospects, noting that youth often correlates with stronger recovery potential. “But it’s not without hope. They are young and that means they still have a lot of vitality.”

The tragedy has united the local community, with many residents offering support to victims’ families and the emergency responders who continue to manage the aftermath of the devastating incident.
