A conservative Honduran lawmaker was injured Thursday when an assailant threw a homemade explosive device into the country’s Congress, escalating political tensions following the country’s disputed November election.

Deputy Gladis Aurora López, a member of the conservative National Party, sustained non-life-threatening injuries when the device detonated in a hallway of the legislative building in Tegucigalpa. The explosion tore through López’s jacket and knocked her to the floor before colleagues rushed her to receive medical treatment.

Tomás Zambrano, who leads the National Party’s congressional delegation, quickly assigned blame for the attack, pointing to LIBRE in a statement posted on the social media platform X. “We consider this a direct attack against the National Party,” Zambrano wrote, further inflaming the already tense political atmosphere.

The National Electoral Council announced Asfura as the victor nearly a month after voting took place, but the narrow margin has fueled disputes over the outcome.
