Honduran Lawmaker Injured in Explosive Attack on Congress

A conservative Honduran lawmaker was injured Thursday when an assailant threw a homemade explosive device into the country’s Congress, escalating political tensions following the country’s disputed November election.

Deputy Gladis Aurora López, a member of the conservative National Party, sustained non-life-threatening injuries when the device detonated in a hallway of the legislative building in Tegucigalpa. The explosion tore through López’s jacket and knocked her to the floor before colleagues rushed her to receive medical treatment.

Security footage revealed the explosive was thrown from the street outside the congressional building by an individual who appeared to be accompanied by another person. Police have launched an investigation but have not yet apprehended any suspects in connection with the attack.

The incident occurred as lawmakers had been summoned to consider a controversial proposal from the outgoing Liberty and Refoundation Party (LIBRE). The proposal called for an election recount, despite electoral authorities having already declared President-elect Nasry Asfura of the National Party the winner in December.

Tomás Zambrano, who leads the National Party’s congressional delegation, quickly assigned blame for the attack, pointing to LIBRE in a statement posted on the social media platform X. “We consider this a direct attack against the National Party,” Zambrano wrote, further inflaming the already tense political atmosphere.

The attack highlights the deepening political crisis in Honduras, where LIBRE has refused to acknowledge the results of the November 30 presidential election. The National Electoral Council announced Asfura as the victor nearly a month after voting took place, but the narrow margin has fueled disputes over the outcome.

Honduras has struggled with political instability in recent years, with this incident representing the latest chapter in the country’s volatile democratic process. The nation of approximately 9.5 million people faces numerous challenges, including endemic corruption, high poverty rates, and violence that has driven migration northward toward the United States.

Political violence in Honduras has become increasingly concerning to regional observers and human rights organizations. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has previously expressed concern about political violence in the Central American nation, particularly during electoral periods.

This attack comes at a delicate time for Honduras as it prepares for the transition of power. The political uncertainty threatens to undermine confidence in democratic institutions in a country already facing significant governance challenges.

For the National Party, which has held power through multiple administrations, the attack represents a dangerous escalation in what has been a contentious electoral aftermath. For LIBRE, founded by former president Manuel Zelaya following his ousting in a 2009 coup, the disputed election results have become a rallying point for their supporters.

International observers, including the Organization of American States and the European Union, had deployed missions to monitor the November elections. Their assessments of the electoral process will likely play a crucial role in how the international community responds to the ongoing dispute.

As Honduras navigates this latest crisis, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of democratic processes in the region and the potential for political disagreements to spill over into violence. Security around government buildings in Tegucigalpa has reportedly been increased in the aftermath of the attack as authorities brace for possible further unrest.
