Three Dead, Including Infant, After Tree Falls During Easter Gathering in Germany
Three people, including a 10-month-old baby girl, were killed Sunday when powerful winds caused a tree to fall on participants during an Easter egg hunt near Satrupholm in northern Germany, local police reported.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when approximately 50 people from a residential facility for mothers, pregnant women, and children had gathered in the woods for the holiday celebration. Without warning, a massive 30-meter (100-foot) tree toppled onto the group, trapping four people beneath it.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene but were unable to save two of the victims—a 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl—who died at the site. The 21-year-old woman’s infant daughter was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly afterward. An 18-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter, according to police statements.
The German Weather Service had issued high wind warnings for the region prior to the tragedy. Local media outlet Bild published images from the aftermath showing Easter eggs scattered across the ground and victims covered with white sheets, underscoring the sudden transformation from celebration to disaster.
The residential facility where victims lived is part of Germany’s state-funded child welfare system, designed to provide support services for pregnant women and new mothers requiring assistance. Following the incident, grief counselors were dispatched to help the traumatized survivors and witnesses process the devastating event.
Government officials from Schleswig-Holstein, the northern German state where Satrupholm is located, expressed profound sorrow over the accident. In a joint statement distributed by German news agency dpa, Regional Governor Daniel Günther, Interior Minister Magdalena Finke, and Youth and Families Minister Aminata Touré said they were “deeply shaken” by the tragedy.
“Our thoughts are with the family members of the dead, with the injured, and with everyone who had to experience this terrible occurrence,” the statement read.
The incident highlights the dangers of severe weather events, which have become increasingly unpredictable across Germany and much of Europe in recent years. Weather-related accidents have prompted growing concerns about public safety during outdoor gatherings, particularly during holidays when large groups often congregate in parks and wooded areas.
Social service organizations throughout Germany typically organize community events during Easter, especially for vulnerable populations who might otherwise be isolated during the holiday period. Such facilities provide crucial support networks for young mothers, many of whom face financial hardship or lack family assistance.
The Satrupholm tragedy has sent shockwaves through Germany’s social services community, with many facilities reviewing their safety protocols for outdoor activities, particularly during inclement weather conditions.
Local authorities have not released the names of the victims, as is customary in Germany to protect privacy, especially when minors are involved. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, though initial reports suggest that the combination of saturated ground from recent rainfall and strong wind gusts likely contributed to the tree’s collapse.
Memorial services for the victims are expected in the coming days as the community begins the difficult process of mourning the lives lost during what should have been a joyful celebration.
