Deadly Market Raid in Central Nigeria Leaves Over 30 Dead, Several Kidnapped
Armed attackers stormed a rural market in central Nigeria on Saturday, killing more than 30 people and kidnapping several others in the latest outbreak of violence to hit Africa’s most populous nation.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that gunmen raided the Daji market in Demo village, Niger state, around 4:30 p.m., unleashing terror on local vendors and shoppers. “Over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, and some persons were also kidnapped. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims,” Abiodun stated.
Witnesses reported seeing assailants arrive on motorcycles before opening fire indiscriminately. The attackers torched market stalls and seized food supplies during the assault, which appeared to be part of a larger operation.
Dauda Shakulle, who was wounded while attempting to flee, told Reuters that the attackers showed no mercy. “There has been no presence of security forces since the attacks began. We are currently recovering corpses,” Shakulle said, adding that women and children were among those targeted.
Local residents reported that the Daji market attack followed earlier raids that began Friday in neighboring villages, including Agwarra and Borgu, suggesting a coordinated campaign of violence across the region.
The incident marks the latest in a disturbing pattern of mass violence and kidnappings plaguing Nigeria, particularly in its central and northern regions. In November, armed men abducted 25 girls from a boarding school in Kebbi State. Another high-profile case involved the kidnapping of more than 300 children and 12 teachers from St. Mary’s Private Catholic School, also in Niger state. The Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) later confirmed that all those abducted from the school were safely released.
“From the first hours of the abduction, the OLA family—together with the local Church in the Diocese of Kontagora, the families of Papiri, and communities across Nigeria—was upheld by a remarkable global solidarity of prayer and advocacy,” said Sister Mary Barron, the congregation leader of the OLA Sisters.
Security experts point to a complex web of factors driving the violence, including poverty, ethnic tensions, competition for resources, and the growing influence of various armed groups. These range from criminal gangs engaged in kidnapping for ransom to ideologically motivated insurgents.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned in November that the growing insecurity and insurgent violence in northern Nigeria are exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. Nearly 35 million people are projected to face severe food insecurity during the 2026 lean season—the pre-harvest period when food supplies typically reach their lowest levels.
The WFP has expressed concern that unchecked hunger could further destabilize the region by creating conditions that allow insurgent groups to exploit local desperation and expand their influence. As armed groups target marketplaces, schools, and communities, they disrupt not only immediate security but also agricultural production and food distribution networks.
Nigeria’s federal government has repeatedly promised to address the security crisis, but local communities in affected regions often complain about inadequate protection from security forces. The absence of police or military personnel during prolonged attacks, as reported by survivors of the Daji market raid, highlights this ongoing challenge.
As recovery efforts continue in Demo village, the latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria, raising urgent questions about the effectiveness of current strategies to protect vulnerable communities and combat the cycle of violence that threatens stability across the region.
