A former student opened fire at a vocational high school in southeastern Turkey on Tuesday, injuring at least 16 people before taking his own life as police closed in, according to local officials.
The 18-year-old gunman launched the attack at the school in Siverek, using a shotgun to fire indiscriminately at students and staff. The assault began in the school yard before the attacker moved inside the building, Governor Hasan Sildak told local media.
Chaotic scenes unfolded as students fled the building, with footage from the scene showing teenagers sprinting away while emergency services rushed to respond. Among the injured were 10 students, four teachers, a school canteen employee, and a police officer. Five victims with more serious injuries were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital.
“The individual was cornered inside the building through police intervention and died after shooting himself,” Governor Sildak told reporters at the scene. He described the incident as “isolated” and noted that the attacker had no prior criminal record.
One student witness, Omer Furkan Sayar, recounted the terrifying moments to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency. “He suddenly entered the classroom and fired. He fired four or five times. Two people were hit. He then went into the next classroom,” Sayar said. To escape the gunfire, Sayar and a friend jumped from a classroom window.
“He didn’t say anything, he entered and started to shoot directly,” the student added.
Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the attack. Governor Sildak mentioned that the school had previously been assessed and declared safe, which explains why no permanent police officer was stationed there for protection.
School shootings are relatively rare in Turkey compared to countries like the United States. Gun ownership in Turkey is regulated, though not uncommon, particularly in rural and southeastern regions where hunting is popular and some families keep firearms for personal protection. Licensed shotguns are among the more accessible firearms in the country.
The shooting has shocked the community of Siverek, a town in Şanlıurfa Province with a population of around 250,000. The region, close to Turkey’s border with Syria, has historically faced various security challenges, though these have typically been related to broader geopolitical tensions rather than school violence.
Turkey’s education ministry is expected to review security protocols at schools nationwide following the incident. Officials indicated that a “comprehensive” investigation into the shooting would be conducted to understand both the circumstances and potential preventive measures for the future.
The incident comes at a time when school security has been increasingly discussed in Turkey, with some urban schools already implementing enhanced security measures including metal detectors and security guards. However, many schools in smaller towns and rural areas operate with minimal security infrastructure.
Mental health experts in Turkey have called for improved psychological support services in educational institutions, noting that identifying and addressing issues among troubled students could help prevent such tragedies. The education system has been under strain in recent years due to various factors including the economic challenges facing the country and the impact of hosting millions of refugees from neighboring conflicts.
As the investigation continues, local authorities have offered counseling services to students and families affected by the traumatic event.
