Australian authorities have identified a father and son as the perpetrators of a deadly mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney that has shocked the nation and reverberated globally. The attack, which occurred at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, left 16 people dead and 40 hospitalized in what officials are investigating as a targeted act of terrorism against the Jewish community.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed during a Monday press conference that a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son carried out the attack. The father was killed during the incident, while the son remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Authorities stated they are not seeking additional suspects.

The father was a licensed gun owner with six legally registered firearms, all of which have been recovered. Some weapons were found at the scene of the massacre, while others were seized during search warrant executions at two separate locations, according to police.

The victims range in age from 10 to 87 years old, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence. The shooting occurred around 6:45 p.m. local time during “Chanukah By The Sea,” an annual celebration marking the first day of the Jewish holiday with the lighting of the first Menorah candle.

In a concerning development, investigators discovered evidence of multiple improvised explosive devices in a vehicle near the attack site. “We have our rescue bomb disposal unit there at the moment working on that,” Commissioner Lanyon stated.

This massacre represents the deadliest attack targeting Jews since the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023, and comes amid rising concerns about antisemitism in Australia. The country’s Jewish communities have reported increasing incidents of harassment and threats in recent months, particularly since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the tragedy while speaking at an event in Jerusalem. “At these very moments, our sisters and brothers in Sydney, Australia, have been attacked by vile terrorists in a very cruel attack on Jews who went to light the first candle of Chanukah on Bondi Beach,” Herzog said. “Our hearts go out to them. The heart of the entire nation of Israel misses a beat at this very moment.”

Herzog also called on Australian authorities to take stronger action against what he described as “the enormous wave of antisemitism which is plaguing Australian society.”

The attack has prompted increased security measures at Jewish sites across Australia, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemning the violence and pledging full support to the affected communities. In a statement, Albanese called the shooting “a heinous act of violence against innocent people celebrating a religious holiday.”

Community leaders have expressed shock at the scale and brazenness of the attack. Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, said, “This is unprecedented in Australian history. We’ve never seen this kind of targeted violence against our community before.”

The shooting occurs against a backdrop of increasing global antisemitism, with incidents reported across many Western nations. Security analysts note that Jewish holidays often see heightened security concerns, but the scale of this attack has stunned even experienced observers.

As the investigation continues, authorities are examining the suspects’ backgrounds and motives, including any potential links to extremist ideologies or groups. Officials have promised a thorough probe and increased protection for vulnerable communities throughout Australia.
