Greek Court Upholds Convictions of Far-Right Golden Dawn Leaders

An appeals court in Athens has unanimously upheld the convictions of the leadership and senior members of Greece’s extreme-right Golden Dawn party, confirming its designation as a criminal organization. The Wednesday ruling maintains the 2020 convictions of 42 party members and associates who had appealed their sentences.

The five-judge panel at the Criminal Appeal Court reinforced the original verdict against party figures including founder Nikos Michaloliakos, 68, who received a 13-year prison sentence but was released on parole last year due to health concerns.

Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis praised the court’s decision, describing Golden Dawn’s presence in parliament as “a traumatic chapter in our parliamentary life, one that I hope and wish we can now leave firmly behind us.”

Founded as a neo-Nazi group in the 1980s, Golden Dawn transformed into a significant political force during Greece’s devastating financial crisis. The party capitalized on economic instability and social unrest by blending ultranationalist ideology with populist anti-establishment messaging and harsh anti-immigration rhetoric.

At the height of its influence in September 2015, Golden Dawn secured 7% of the vote in national elections, becoming the country’s third-largest political party with 18 seats in the 300-member parliament. The party maintained parliamentary representation from 2012 until 2019.

Golden Dawn’s rise coincided with increasing violence against immigrants and political opponents. The organization was implicated in numerous violent attacks against immigrants and left-wing activists across the country. The most notorious incident was the 2013 fatal stabbing of anti-fascist rapper and activist Pavlos Fyssas, which became a turning point in public perception of the group.

The appeals court also upheld the murder conviction of the party associate responsible for Fyssas’s death, bringing visible relief to the singer’s mother, Magda Fyssa, who was present for the ruling.

“I thank everyone for being here,” she told several hundred supporters gathered outside the courthouse. “It’s a historic day — a victory for solidarity and a victory for love and peace.”

The original trial, which concluded in 2020, was one of the longest court proceedings in modern Greek history, lasting more than five years. Legal experts have described it as the most significant trial of fascist criminality since Nuremberg, reflecting its importance in establishing legal precedent for tackling far-right extremism within democratic institutions.

Only two defendants appeared in court Wednesday: former lawmakers Ilias Kasidiaris and Ioannis Lagos. Kasidiaris, who has since formed his own nationalist party, denounced the verdict as politically motivated.

“I challenge anyone to find anything — even half a thing — that was illegal,” Kasidiaris stated after the ruling. “This case will not end in the Greek courts, but at an international court, where I will seek my ultimate vindication.”

Lagos, who was elected to the European Parliament in 2019, had his parliamentary immunity lifted in 2021 to face these charges.

The court is scheduled to begin hearing arguments on sentencing on Thursday, which will determine whether any adjustments will be made to the original prison terms.

The case has significant implications across Europe, where several countries have witnessed similar far-right movements gaining electoral support. Greece’s successful prosecution of Golden Dawn as a criminal organization represents a rare example of a democratic system legally dismantling an extremist group that had gained legitimate political representation.

Human rights organizations have welcomed the verdict, noting that it sends a clear message that acts of violence motivated by racist ideology will be prosecuted regardless of political standing.
