German police confirmed Tuesday that Alice and Ellen Kessler, the identical twin dancers and singers who captivated international audiences for decades, have died at the age of 89. The sisters were found in their shared home in Grünwald, an affluent suburb of Munich, in what authorities described as a “joint suicide.”

The Kessler twins rose to prominence in the 1950s and built an illustrious career that spanned more than six decades, sharing stages with entertainment legends including Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, and Harry Belafonte.

Born in Saxony, Germany, the twins showed artistic promise from an early age, beginning their formal dance training as children at the Leipzig Opera children’s ballet. In 1952, when they were just 16, their family fled from what was then East Germany to the West, where they quickly found work dancing at a revue theater in Düsseldorf.

They notably declined an opportunity to appear alongside Elvis Presley in the 1964 film “Viva Las Vegas” – a decision made deliberately to avoid being typecast in American musical films, according to German news agency dpa.

In an interview shortly before their 80th birthday, Alice Kessler reflected on the strength they drew from their partnership, saying they “probably wouldn’t have managed to perform for so long alone” and that being a duo “only has advantages.” She added with profound insight: “Together you’re stronger.”
