Georgian authorities detained opposition leader Alexander Elisashvili Saturday on accusations of attempting to set fire to a Tbilisi court building, marking another escalation in the country’s ongoing political crisis.

According to the Interior Ministry, the 47-year-old founder of the Citizens party broke into the court chancellery building in Georgia’s capital at dawn. Security footage released by authorities allegedly shows Elisashvili smashing a window with a hammer before pouring gasoline around the office perimeter.

The ministry claims Elisashvili was armed with a handgun and injured a court official during his arrest. Video released by authorities appeared to show a handgun, a bottle of gasoline, a lighter, and shattered glass at the scene.

However, concerns about potential mistreatment have emerged after Elisashvili appeared in the footage with visible facial bruising. His lawyer, Giorgi Kevkhishvili, told reporters, “He has serious injuries on his face. He has been severely beaten.”

Elisashvili’s Citizens party, which belongs to the Lelo-Strong Georgia coalition, is one of the three primary opposition groups challenging the ruling Georgian Dream party’s increasingly authoritarian governance. In a statement following the arrest, Lelo condemned Elisashvili’s actions as “unacceptable and indefensible” while suggesting they stemmed from persistent government pressure.

“Aleko Elisashvili has repeatedly been the victim of injustice and violence at the hands of the regime, and his confession is proof that this is a selfless act of one man against the regime,” the coalition stated.

The incident comes amid a significant political crisis in Georgia, with the ruling Georgian Dream party intensifying its crackdown on opposition forces. The government has petitioned the Constitutional Court to ban all three main opposition groups — the United National Movement, Akhali/Coalition for Change, and Lelo — in what critics describe as a systematic dismantling of democratic institutions.

Several opposition leaders currently face criminal charges, imprisonment, or have fled into exile. Political analysts and international observers have repeatedly characterized these prosecutions as politically motivated attempts to silence dissent.

The timing of Elisashvili’s arrest is particularly notable, coming just one day after thousands of Georgians marked 365 days of continuous protests against the government’s controversial decision to halt European Union accession talks. On Friday, demonstrators carrying drums, whistles, and EU flags marched along Tbilisi’s main Rustaveli Avenue in a show of ongoing resistance.

These daily protests began on November 28, 2024, when Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the suspension of EU membership negotiations. While the demonstrations have decreased in size over time, they represent unprecedented sustained public opposition to the government’s increasingly pro-Russian stance.

In response to the protest movement, Georgian Dream has implemented a series of restrictive measures, including tightening regulations on public gatherings and passing legislation targeting civil society organizations, independent media outlets, and rights groups. Many of these laws bear striking similarities to legislation used in Russia under President Vladimir Putin to suppress political opposition.

Georgia’s political trajectory has raised significant concerns among Western allies, with the European Union and United States repeatedly expressing alarm over democratic backsliding in the former Soviet republic that once showed promising signs of Western integration.

The ongoing situation highlights the deep polarization within Georgian society, with significant portions of the population advocating for European integration while the ruling party moves increasingly toward Moscow’s orbit of influence. As tensions continue to mount, the detention of opposition figures like Elisashvili further complicates prospects for political reconciliation in the strategically located Caucasus nation.
