Palestinians in Gaza buried a woman pregnant with twins and two of her children Saturday, victims of Israeli airstrikes that killed at least 13 people across the territory on Friday.
The deadly attacks occurred in multiple locations, with two men killed in Gaza City and eight others, including four police officers, in the southern city of Khan Younis after Israel reportedly targeted a police vehicle, according to local hospitals.
In a particularly devastating incident in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya, Khalid Al-Tanani recounted the horrific sequence of strikes that claimed the lives of his wife Islam, who was pregnant with twins, and two of their four children – 4-year-old Naya and 13-year-old Hamza.
“With the first shell, thank God we all survived and were calling out to each other. Then they fired the second, third, and fourth shells one after the other. Their voices fell silent,” Al-Tanani described in a grief-stricken account. “I went inside and found my wife, Islam Al-Tanani, martyred, and my son, Hamza, and Naya in her mother’s arms. I found them martyred.”
Hamza’s 13-year-old twin survived the attack, along with another of the couple’s children. Al-Tanani said the family had just begun discussing preparations for the upcoming birth of twins.
During funeral services Saturday, family members openly mourned their losses. Hamza’s grandmother was heard sobbing, “You took my soul with you, Hamza, you took me with you and broke me, Hamza.”
The Israeli military stated it had targeted militants who posed threats to troops in the area and claimed it had issued warnings to civilians before the strikes. However, Al-Tanani contradicted this account, saying no warnings were given before the deadly bombardment.
Regarding the other incidents, Israel’s military confirmed targeting two militants it said threatened troops in Gaza City but offered no comment on the Khan Younis strike that killed eight people.
Despite the ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, deadly Israeli strikes have consistently disrupted the fragile truce. Many Gaza residents report that the violence feels virtually unabated, as Israeli forces continue operations they say target militants and respond to attacks on troops.
The ongoing violence has taken a significant toll since the ceasefire began six months ago. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israeli attacks have killed more than 790 Palestinians during this supposed truce period. Israeli casualties during the ceasefire include four soldiers.
The ministry, which operates under the Hamas-led government but maintains casualty records considered reliable by UN agencies and independent experts, reports that 72,300 Palestinians have been killed since the war began following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. That initial attack killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel, primarily civilians.
The continued violence underscores the fragility of the ceasefire agreement as both sides accuse each other of violations. Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned about the deteriorating conditions in Gaza, where infrastructure remains severely damaged and medical facilities struggle to treat the wounded amid shortages of essential supplies.
International mediators continue efforts to strengthen the ceasefire and advance negotiations for a more comprehensive resolution, but progress has been slow amid mutual distrust and accusations of violations from both Israeli authorities and Hamas leadership.
For civilians caught in the crossfire like the Al-Tanani family, the technical distinction between war and ceasefire holds little meaning as they continue to face deadly violence and mourn devastating losses.
