King Charles III Addresses Congress, Underscores Historic US-UK Bond

In an eloquent address to a joint meeting of Congress, King Charles III emphasized the enduring ties between the United Kingdom and the United States while acknowledging the complex origins of their relationship.

Speaking from the House Chamber at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, the British monarch delivered his remarks during a state visit marking America’s semi-quincentennial year of independence.

“Standing here today, it is hard not to feel the weight of history on my shoulder — because the modern relationship between our two nations and our own peoples spans not merely 250 years, but over four centuries,” King Charles told assembled lawmakers.

The monarch acknowledged the historical tensions that gave birth to American independence, noting with characteristic British humor, “With the spirit of 1776 in our minds, we can perhaps agree that we do not always agree – at least in the first instance.”

The address came amid heightened security concerns following what the King described as “the incident not far from this great building that sought to harm the leadership of your nation.” He delivered a resolute message of solidarity: “Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm.”

King Charles follows in the footsteps of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who addressed Congress in 1991. Reflecting on this, he noted, “Today I am here on this great occasion in the life of our nations to express the highest regard and friendship of the British people to the people of the United States.”

The speech highlighted the shared democratic traditions between the two nations, tracing how American democratic principles were influenced by British constitutional developments. “Our Declaration of Rights of 1689 was not only the foundation of our constitutional monarchy, but also provided the source of so many of the principles reiterated, often verbatim, in the American Bill of Rights of 1791,” he observed.

In addressing contemporary challenges, the King emphasized the importance of the transatlantic alliance in maintaining global security. He referenced the United Kingdom’s commitment to “the biggest sustained increase in defense spending since the Cold War” and highlighted his own service in the Royal Navy, following family tradition.

The monarch expressed solidarity with Ukraine, calling for “the same, unyielding resolve” shown after 9/11 to secure “a truly just and lasting peace.” He also underscored the nations’ defense collaboration, including joint F-35 fighter production and the AUKUS submarine program with Australia.

On economic ties, King Charles cited the robust relationship between the countries: “$430 billion in annual trade that continues to grow, the $1.7 trillion in mutual investment that fuels innovation, and the millions of jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.”

The King devoted significant attention to environmental concerns, drawing a geological connection between the nations by noting that “the mountains of Scotland and Appalachia were one, a single, continuous range” before any national borders existed. He warned that the “collapse of critical natural systems” threatens prosperity and national security.

As his address concluded, King Charles called for renewed commitment to international engagement: “I pray with all my heart that our alliance will continue to defend our shared values… and that we ignore the clarion calls to become ever more inward-looking.”

The speech offered a thoughtful reflection on 250 years of US-UK relations, emphasizing how the initial rupture between the nations evolved into what the King called “one of the most consequential alliances in human history.”

“From the bitter divisions of 250 years ago,” he concluded, “we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential alliances in human history.”
