A UN peacekeeper was killed and three others wounded in southern Lebanon on Saturday when their patrol came under small arms fire near the village of Ghandouriyeh, just days after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect.

French President Emmanuel Macron identified the deceased soldier as Staff Sgt. Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment from Montauban. Among the three wounded peacekeepers, two are in serious condition.

“Everything suggests that responsibility for this attack lies with Hezbollah,” Macron stated on social media. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) also attributed the attack to “non-state actors” in the region, widely understood to be a reference to Hezbollah.

Hezbollah swiftly denied involvement in the incident. In a statement, the militant group called for caution in assigning blame until Lebanese authorities complete a thorough investigation. The group expressed surprise at what it called “hasty accusations,” noting that similar condemnation had been absent “when the Israeli enemy attacks UNIFIL forces.”

According to French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin, the peacekeepers were ambushed while on a mission to clear explosive ordnance and establish access to UNIFIL positions that had been isolated for several days due to fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

“He was caught in an ambush by an armed group at very close range,” Vautrin said on social media platform X. “Immediately hit by a direct shot from a light weapon, he was pulled back under fire by his comrades, who were unable to resuscitate him.”

Lebanon’s Military Tribunal has opened an investigation into the attack, according to judicial officials speaking on condition of anonymity. The Lebanese army condemned the attack and pledged to continue its “close coordination” with UNIFIL while working to apprehend those responsible.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire that went into effect at midnight Thursday, ending months of intense conflict. The Israel-Hezbollah war, which began on March 2, has resulted in nearly 2,300 deaths in Lebanon, displaced over one million people, and caused widespread destruction.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military reported conducting aerial and ground strikes in southern Lebanon after identifying what it described as ceasefire violations by militants approaching areas where Israeli troops are stationed. The military referenced a “Yellow Line” that militants allegedly attempted to approach from the north, though this demarcation is not mentioned in the ceasefire agreement announced by U.S. President Joe Biden.

Senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qammati told Lebanon’s Al-Jadeed TV on Saturday that the group would not tolerate Israeli strikes similar to those that continued after a previous November truce. “This time we will not practice the strategic patience policy,” Qammati warned.

The attack on UN peacekeepers raises serious concerns about the sustainability of the ceasefire. The UN force, which has been deployed in southern Lebanon since 1978, plays a crucial role in monitoring the border area between Lebanon and Israel.

Following the incident, President Macron spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to demand a full investigation and accountability for those responsible. He reiterated “the importance of full respect for the ceasefire by all parties and reaffirmed France’s commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, for the benefit of all Lebanese people and regional stability.”

This marks the second fatality among French forces in the Middle East in recent weeks. On March 12, a drone attack on a Kurdish military base in Iraq’s Erbil region killed French Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion and wounded six others.

The death of Staff Sgt. Montorio underscores the persistent dangers facing international peacekeeping forces in the volatile region, even as diplomatic efforts continue to maintain the fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah.
