Massive Protests Disrupt AfD Youth Wing Conference in Germany

Between 25,000 and 30,000 protesters descended on the central German city of Giessen Saturday, delaying the start of a conference for Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) newly formed youth wing, Generation Deutschland. The demonstration marked one of the largest political protests in recent German history, prompting authorities to deploy 6,000 police officers—the largest security operation ever conducted in the state of Hesse.

The protests turned violent at several points throughout the day, with some demonstrators throwing stones at police officers. Law enforcement responded by using pepper spray and water cannons to disperse crowds, particularly when approximately 2,000 protesters attempted to break through barriers toward the convention center. According to official reports, between 10 and 15 police officers sustained minor injuries during the confrontations.

AfD co-leader Alice Weidel condemned the protesters during her address at the convention center. “What is being done out there – dear left-wingers, dear extremists, you need to look at yourselves – is something that is deeply undemocratic,” she stated.

The protests included activists from various left-wing groups, including some allegedly associated with Antifa, an organization that former President Donald Trump designated as a domestic terrorist group during his administration.

Boris Rhein, the Christian Democratic Union governor of Hesse, criticized the violent nature of the protests. “The use of violence and attempts to prevent assemblies through marches can never be democratic means,” Rhein said, emphasizing the importance of protecting democratic processes despite political differences.

The conference marked the official launch of Generation Deutschland, which replaces the AfD’s previous youth organization, Young Alternative. The predecessor group dissolved after Germany’s federal intelligence agency classified it as an “extremist organization” in 2023 due to concerns about its ideological positions.

The newly formed youth wing elected 28-year-old Jean-Pascal Hohm as its chairman. According to German newspaper Die Welt, a local intelligence report has cited Hohm for expressing nationalist and anti-immigrant views. During the conference, Hohm declared, “We will fight resolutely for a genuine shift in migration policy that ensures Germany remains the homeland of Germans.”

Former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell expressed concern about the protests on social media platform X, writing: “The intolerant and violent Left is gaining ground in Germany. If they follow the U.S. left then they will promote deadly violence while also losing public support — and elections.” Grenell also criticized German media coverage, suggesting that “the German left gets lots of support from the media in Germany.”

The protests reflect the growing political polarization in Germany, where the AfD has emerged as a significant political force. The party secured an impressive second-place finish in elections earlier this year with 20.8% of the vote. However, mainstream German parties have consistently refused to form coalitions with the AfD, citing what they describe as the party’s extremist positions.

Founded initially as an anti-euro party, the AfD first entered Germany’s national parliament in 2017 amid public concern over the arrival of large numbers of migrants in the mid-2010s. While immigration remains the party’s signature issue, it has successfully capitalized on various sources of public discontent, expanding its support base beyond single-issue voters.

The demonstrations in Giessen highlight the intense political divisions within German society as the country grapples with questions of national identity, immigration policy, and the appropriate boundaries of political discourse. As the AfD continues to gain electoral support, the frequency and intensity of such confrontations between political opponents appear likely to increase.
