Families of Sydney Massacre Victims Demand Federal Inquiry Into Rising Antisemitism

Families of those killed and wounded in the recent Bondi Beach massacre have issued an open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, calling for a federal royal commission to investigate the rise of antisemitism in Australia and security failures that led to the deadly attack.

In the letter released Monday, 17 families affected by the December 14 attack that left 15 dead and 40 wounded urged the government to launch the most powerful form of public investigation available in Australia. The massacre, which targeted a Hanukkah festival, is the worst mass shooting the country has experienced in nearly three decades.

“We need to know why clear warning signs were ignored, how antisemitic hatred and Islamic extremism were allowed to dangerously grow unchecked, and what changes must be made to protect all Australians going forward,” the families wrote in their appeal.

Despite mounting pressure from victims’ families, Jewish community leaders, and opposition lawmakers, Prime Minister Albanese continues to resist calls for a royal commission, arguing such an investigation would take years to provide answers.

Instead, Albanese has announced an inquiry led by retired bureaucrat Dennis Richardson that will examine potential procedural and legal failures leading to the shooting, which authorities believe was inspired by the Islamic State group. This review is expected to report its findings in April next year.

“My heart breaks for the families of the victims of the Bondi terrorist atrocity,” Albanese told reporters. “My job, as the Australian prime minister, is to act in the national interests. It is in the national interest for us to do the Richardson review on national security.”

While Albanese indicated federal authorities would support a royal commission promised by the New South Wales state government, the families insist a state-level inquiry is insufficient.

“The rise of antisemitism in Australia goes far beyond one state jurisdiction. It is a national crisis that demands a powerful response,” the families emphasized.

The attack has prompted heightened security measures throughout Sydney. Traditionally festive New Year’s Eve celebrations at Bondi Beach have been canceled, with organizers refunding tickets to an annual music festival planned for the area. Meanwhile, security for Sydney’s main celebration, expected to draw over one million revelers to the harbor for the iconic fireworks display, will be significantly bolstered with heavily armed police maintaining a visible presence.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns revealed discussions are underway with the federal government about potential military assistance to strengthen security in Sydney.

“This is the worst terrorism event that’s affected our state and our country ever, and it requires a comprehensive response,” Minns told reporters.

The state’s police Operation Shelter, established shortly after the Hamas attack on Israel to combat antisemitic behavior and hate crimes in Sydney, has received additional resources following the Bondi massacre.

One of the alleged gunmen, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was killed by police at the scene, while his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram was wounded and now faces numerous charges, including 15 counts of murder.

As the investigation continues, Albanese has attempted to redirect public focus from the perpetrators to those who acted heroically during the attack. Last week, he announced plans for a national bravery award to recognize civilians and first responders who confronted “the worst of evil” during the massacre.

Among those being celebrated is Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian-Australian shopkeeper who tackled and disarmed one of the attackers before being wounded by shotgun pellets. A crowdfunding campaign established to honor his intervention has raised more than AU$2.5 million ($1.7 million) from over 43,000 donors worldwide.

Recently released from hospital after multiple surgeries, al Ahmed told CBS News that his conscience compelled him to act. “I don’t want to see people killed in front of me, I don’t want to see blood, I don’t want to hear his gun, I don’t want to see people screaming and begging, asking ‘help, help’ and that’s my soul that asked me to do that,” he explained.

“I know I saved lots of people’s lives: Innocent kids and women… and men, and I know I saved lots. But I feel sorry still for the lost,” he added.

Al Ahmed’s heroism has inspired street artist Jarrod Grech to create a mural in a Melbourne lane depicting him as a hospital patient with the caption “True Blue” – an Australian colloquialism meaning genuine, loyal, and embodying Australian values.

“I like to paint significant moments, and that one was about the Australian spirit,” Grech told The Associated Press. “It’s about the act that he did and I thought that was a True Blue thing.”
