Misinformation Spreads Online Amid U.S.-Israel Strikes on Iran
Amid escalating military actions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, a wave of false information has flooded social media platforms, complicating an already tense international situation.
As U.S. and Israeli forces continued strikes against Iran on Monday following weekend attacks that reportedly killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, fabricated images and videos purporting to show the conflict’s aftermath have gained significant traction online.
Intelligence experts note this pattern of misinformation is common during major geopolitical crises, with both state and non-state actors potentially exploiting information vacuums for political advantage.
Among the most widely circulated false claims is an AI-generated image allegedly showing Khamenei’s body under rubble. Analysis by Google’s Gemini app detected SynthID watermarking in the image, confirming it was created or altered using artificial intelligence. The fabricated image depicts a blurred body trapped beneath debris while rescue workers attempt to clear the area, with fires burning in the background.
While Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death early Sunday following Saturday’s coordinated attacks, no official photos of his body have been released to the public, creating space for such fabrications.
Another prominent piece of misinformation involves claims that the USS Abraham Lincoln, a U.S. aircraft carrier deployed to the region, was damaged or sunk by Iranian ballistic missiles. U.S. Central Command directly refuted these assertions in an official statement, clarifying that “the warship was not hit” and that “the missiles didn’t even come close.” The carrier continues normal operations and is launching aircraft as part of ongoing military movements in the region.
Many images claiming to show the aircraft carrier under attack or sinking are years old, with some dating back to at least 2021, predating the current conflict entirely.
False videos purportedly showing American military losses have also circulated widely. One clip claiming to depict a U.S. fighter jet being shot down over Iran is actually footage from a military-themed video game. The original clip was posted to a YouTube channel dedicated to military game simulations in November 2022, clearly labeled as entertainment content.
This misinformation contrasts with actual events reported by U.S. military officials, who confirmed three F-15E Strike Eagles were mistakenly downed in Kuwait—not Iran—by friendly Kuwaiti fire on Monday. Iranian state television has attempted to take credit for at least one of these incidents, further muddying the information landscape.
Perhaps most emotionally manipulative is the circulation of a video falsely presented as showing U.S. soldiers returning home in coffins from the Iranian conflict. Fact-checkers have identified this as footage from a 2011 dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base for service members who died in Iraq during Operation New Dawn.
The original video was posted to YouTube by a photographer and Vietnam War veteran, containing distinctive visual elements that confirm its origin well before the current conflict.
Military analysts suggest this pattern of misinformation serves multiple purposes: stoking nationalist sentiment, exaggerating military capabilities, and potentially influencing public opinion in Western countries regarding involvement in the Middle East.
The rapid spread of such false claims highlights the challenges facing both news consumers and policymakers during international crises. Media literacy experts recommend verifying information through multiple reputable sources, checking dates on images and videos, and maintaining healthy skepticism toward dramatic claims, especially during active conflicts when reliable information may be limited.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, distinguishing fact from fiction remains crucial for understanding the true nature and scope of the conflict.
