The Federal Aviation Administration issued an urgent advisory Friday cautioning all pilots about potential dangers when flying over Venezuela amid escalating tensions in the region. The warning cites a “worsening security situation and heightened military activity” that could threaten aircraft at any altitude, including those taking off, landing, or parked on Venezuelan soil.

“The potential risks apply to all operational phases of flight,” the FAA stated in its notice, which will remain in effect for 90 days. When questioned about the specifics behind the warning, the Pentagon redirected inquiries to the FAA, which confirmed the advisory but provided no additional details about the nature of the threats.

The caution comes during a period of intensifying pressure from the Trump administration against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government. In recent weeks, the United States has significantly expanded its military presence in the Caribbean near Venezuela, assembling the largest naval force in the region in decades.

The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, accompanied by several destroyers, has been deployed to the area. This naval buildup follows earlier U.S. military activities, including bomber flights conducted near Venezuelan airspace, some of which simulated potential attack scenarios, according to defense analysts.

Mary Schiavo, former inspector general for the Department of Transportation, contextualized the warning within standard FAA protocols. “The FAA puts out this kind of notice anytime there is a military conflict,” Schiavo explained. “I wouldn’t take it as necessarily that any kind of attack is imminent because I’ve seen these issued many times before. But as a pilot myself, I’d certainly heed it.”

The Trump administration has consistently refused to recognize Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader. The tensions escalated further when the U.S. Justice Department filed narcoterrorism charges against Maduro and several other Venezuelan officials in March, accusing them of conspiring with Colombian rebels to “flood the United States with cocaine.”

Adding to the complex situation, the U.S. has recently intensified maritime interdiction operations in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. Since early September, American forces have conducted a series of strikes against vessels allegedly transporting drugs to the United States. These operations have reportedly resulted in more than 80 casualties, raising humanitarian concerns among international observers.

The Venezuelan government has denounced these military movements as provocative and threatening to regional stability. Maduro has repeatedly accused Washington of attempting to orchestrate a coup against his government, claims the U.S. has denied.

The warning creates additional complications for the already struggling Venezuelan aviation sector. International airlines have gradually reduced service to the country over the past five years as its economic crisis has deepened. Those still operating flights to Caracas and other Venezuelan destinations now face additional risk assessments.

Regional security experts suggest the FAA advisory could have multiple interpretations. “The United States may be anticipating military action by Venezuela, or it could be planning additional interdiction operations against suspected drug boats,” Schiavo noted. “It’s difficult to determine precisely what intelligence has prompted this particular notice.”

The aviation warning represents yet another dimension of the multifaceted pressure campaign the Trump administration has maintained against Venezuela, which also includes economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation. The situation continues to evolve against the backdrop of Venezuela’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, with millions of citizens having fled the country due to food shortages, medical supply scarcity, and political instability.

As tensions persist, commercial and private aviation operators must navigate not only physical risks but also complex compliance challenges in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
