European Far-Right Leaders Rally Behind Hungary’s Orbán as Crucial Election Looms

The leaders of more than a dozen European far-right parties converged on Budapest Monday in a show of solidarity for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whose political future hangs in the balance ahead of a pivotal April election. The gathering highlighted Orbán’s enduring influence within global nationalist movements, even as domestic challenges threaten his 16-year grip on power.

Orbán, who has governed Hungary since 2010, has long served as an ideological lighthouse for conservative movements across Europe and the United States. His political playbook—featuring electoral dominance, institutional control, media consolidation, and championing of traditional family values—established him as a trailblazer for right-wing governance well before Donald Trump’s political ascendance in America.

The Budapest assembly brought together the Patriots for Europe coalition, the European Parliament’s third-largest bloc, which Orbán helped establish earlier this year. The group unites far-right parties from 13 EU nations around shared opposition to immigration, skepticism of European integration, and commitment to conservative social values.

Prominent nationalist figures including France’s Marine Le Pen, Italy’s Matteo Salvini, and Dutch politician Geert Wilders took turns at the podium, each endorsing Orbán’s leadership ahead of the April 12 vote. Le Pen, currently appealing a conviction for misusing European Parliament funds, praised Hungary as “an emblem of the resistance of a proud and sovereign people to oppression.”

“On April 12, you will send a new message of strength and determination to tired old technocrats in Brussels,” Le Pen told the assembled crowd.

The stakes of Hungary’s upcoming election extend far beyond its borders. Most surveys show Orbán trailing behind a center-right challenger, raising the possibility that his lengthy dominance—and his outsized influence over global conservative movements—could be waning.

“Hungary is this kind of proof of concept that the MAGA kind of politics can work,” said Kim Lane Scheppele, professor of sociology and international affairs at Princeton University. “If Orbán loses, then it loses some of that luster.”

The Patriots coalition has embraced Trumpian rhetoric, campaigning under the slogan “Make Europe Great Again.” At Monday’s gathering, Orbán articulated ambitious goals, stating, “We are talking openly about wanting to take control of the European Union. We want to occupy and transform the center of Brussels.”

Scheppele noted that Hungary has functioned as a critical incubator for Europe’s far-right, with Orbán leveraging state power and resources to advance nationalist causes. “Hungary has been really important because it’s been governed for 16 years by somebody trying to build this movement, and that means that it’s kind of a safe haven,” she explained.

Orbán’s influence extends well beyond Europe. His mutual admiration with Trump has produced steady exchanges of political endorsements and public praise. Just days before the Patriots gathering, Budapest hosted the fifth Hungarian iteration of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where Orbán declared the West was experiencing “the greatest political realignment of the past hundred years.”

“The epicenter of this realignment, its center of power, is the United States, and its forward base in Europe is Hungary,” Orbán told the CPAC audience.

Trump contributed a video message to the conference, explicitly endorsing Orbán’s reelection bid and commending his defense of “your borders, your culture, your heritage, your sovereignty, and your values.”

Political observers note striking similarities between Orbán’s Hungarian governance model and aspirations within Trump’s movement. “A lot of the inspiration for the way that MAGA launched itself and developed a kind of political program to consolidate power very quickly was modeled on Orbán,” Scheppele said. “These are really interlocking networks and I think that the election therefore looms very large in the MAGA political imagination.”

Orbán’s current political vulnerability stems from multiple domestic challenges, including economic stagnation, deteriorating public services, and mounting corruption allegations. These difficulties mirror concurrent struggles in Trump’s movement, with the U.S. president facing declining poll numbers amid controversies surrounding Iran and immigration policies.

As Hungary’s election approaches, the outcome could resonate far beyond its borders, potentially signaling a shift in the political winds for nationalist movements across Europe and beyond.
