After nine days of nationwide anxiety and intense search efforts, a wolf that escaped from a South Korean zoo has been safely captured, bringing a collective sigh of relief across the country.

The two-year-old male wolf named Neukgu, who had burrowed out of his enclosure at O-World zoo in Daejeon on April 8, was found and tranquilized early Friday morning on a hill near an expressway. The successful capture concluded an operation that involved drones, police, emergency workers, and veterinarians.

The wolf’s escape and subsequent search captivated South Korea, transforming the animal into an unlikely national celebrity. The incident garnered such widespread attention that President Lee Jae Myung made a public statement reassuring citizens that officials were working diligently to capture the wolf alive.

“Neukgu is in stable condition,” zoo officials announced after returning him to the facility. Veterinarians removed a fishing hook from his stomach during a medical examination but reported no other significant health issues—remarkable considering his more than week-long adventure in the wild.

The search had several near misses. Earlier in the week, authorities spotted Neukgu on a mountain near the zoo but failed to contain him when he broke through a perimeter set by rescue workers. A viral video also emerged showing the wolf trotting along a dark mountain road, illuminated by the headlights of a vehicle following behind.

Social media platforms erupted with celebratory messages upon news of the capture, with South Koreans posting comments like “welcome back” and the affectionate warning, “Neukgu, it’s dangerous outside the house.” The outpouring demonstrated how deeply the nation had become invested in the wolf’s fate.

Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo expressed his gratitude on Facebook, writing: “My deepest gratitude to citizens of Daejeon and also the entire nation for your support in ensuring Neukgu’s safe return.”

The extraordinary public concern stemmed partly from previous incidents at the same facility. Animal rights activists had raised alarm about whether Neukgu could survive in the wild and feared he might be killed during capture attempts—a tragic outcome that befell a puma that escaped from O-World in 2018.

Neukgu holds special significance beyond being a zoo attraction. Born at the facility in 2022, he is a third-generation descendant of wolves brought from Russia in 2008 as part of a conservation initiative. The project aims to reintroduce wolves similar to those that roamed Korean wilderness before going extinct in the 1960s, making Neukgu an important symbol of wildlife conservation efforts in the country.

The director of O-World, Lee Kwan Jong, announced that Neukgu will be kept in isolation from other animals while receiving specialized care until he has fully recovered and stabilized from his ordeal.

The incident has raised questions about security measures at the zoo, which has faced criticism over previous animal escapes. Management closed the facility following Neukgu’s disappearance and is now reviewing its security protocols. No reopening date has been announced, though officials expect Neukgu to become a major attraction when visitors are allowed to return.

The wolf’s adventure and safe return have created an unexpected moment of national unity in South Korea. From government officials to ordinary citizens, the country collectively followed and celebrated the conclusion of what could have been a tragic story but instead became one of relief and celebration.
