A powerful earthquake struck southern Mexico on Friday, causing fatalities and widespread damage while disrupting President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press conference of the year when seismic alarms forced an evacuation.

The 6.5 magnitude tremor hit near the town of San Marcos in Guerrero state, close to the Pacific resort city of Acapulco, according to Mexico’s national seismological agency. The quake, which triggered more than 500 aftershocks, occurred at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers), the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

At least two people died as a result of the earthquake. In a small community near the epicenter, a 50-year-old woman was killed when her home collapsed, according to Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado. In Mexico City, a person died after suffering an apparent medical emergency followed by a fall while evacuating a building, Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed.

Infrastructure damage was significant across the affected regions. The state’s civil defense agency documented multiple landslides around Acapulco and on highways throughout Guerrero. A hospital in Chilpancingo, the state capital, sustained major structural damage that necessitated patient evacuations.

The earthquake’s impact extended beyond physical damage, causing communication outages in some areas. José Raymundo Díaz Taboada, a doctor and human rights defender living in the mountains surrounding Acapulco, described the experience: “In that moment the seismic alert went off on my cellphone, and then the shaking began to feel strong with a lot of noise.” He noted being unable to contact friends living along the Costa Chica southeast of Acapulco due to disrupted communications.

Mexico’s vulnerability to earthquakes stems from its location at the intersection of five tectonic plates. The country has experienced several devastating earthquakes in recent history, including the catastrophic 1985 quake that killed thousands in Mexico City and more recent significant tremors in 2017 and 2022.

The timing of Friday’s earthquake was particularly notable as it interrupted President Sheinbaum’s first press briefing of 2024. The newly inaugurated president, who took office in October 2023 as Mexico’s first female head of state, briefly paused the conference when seismic alarms sounded in Mexico City. She resumed the briefing shortly afterward, demonstrating the practiced response that many Mexicans have developed to such events.

Acapulco, a city of approximately 800,000 residents and a major tourist destination, was already recovering from Hurricane Otis, which devastated the region in October 2023 as a Category 5 storm. The earthquake represents another challenge for the area’s infrastructure and economy, particularly its crucial tourism industry.

Mexico’s civil protection protocols, developed and refined following previous disasters, were immediately activated. Emergency services conducted rapid assessments of damaged structures, while authorities urged residents to remain vigilant for aftershocks, which can sometimes cause additional damage to already compromised buildings.

Residents and tourists in both Mexico City and Acapulco evacuated buildings and gathered in streets when the shaking began, following well-established safety procedures. Many in Mexico City are particularly sensitive to earthquake threats after experiencing the devastating consequences of past seismic events.

As assessment of the full extent of damage continues, authorities have focused on restoring communications, clearing roadways affected by landslides, and ensuring the structural integrity of essential facilities like hospitals and schools before allowing reoccupation.
