A driver who plowed his minivan into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their Premier League championship has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison for injuring over 130 people in what the judge described as a horrific rampage.

Paul Doyle, 54, drove through the sea of celebrating fans on May 26 in a two-minute attack that ended only when a bystander entered the vehicle and forced it into park. The minivan came to rest on top of victims.

“You struck people head-on, knocked others onto the bonnet, drove over limbs, crushed prams and forced those nearby to scatter in terror,” Judge Andrew Menary told Doyle during sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court. “You plowed on at speed and over a considerable distance, violently knocking people aside or simply driving over them, person after person after person.”

Prosecutors said Doyle became enraged when traffic prevented him from picking up friends who had attended Liverpool’s championship parade. Dashboard footage captured him cursing at pedestrians, blaring his horn and repeatedly shouting “move, move, move” before deliberately driving into the crowd.

Doyle, who sobbed throughout much of the two-day sentencing hearing, had pleaded guilty last month to 31 counts including dangerous driving, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and intentional wounding.

The court was shown harrowing video footage of terrified people attempting to scramble to safety before being knocked aside, thrown into the air, or pulled under the vehicle’s bumper. Many victims initially feared they were experiencing a terrorist attack.

Prosecutor Paul Greaney said the explanation for Doyle’s actions was “as simple as the consequences were awful.”

“He was a man in a rage, whose anger had completely taken hold of him,” Greaney told the court.

The human toll of Doyle’s actions was extensive. Victims’ impact statements described devastating physical and psychological consequences that continue to affect their lives.

Police Sergeant Dan Hamilton, who was injured in the attack, told the court, “The distress of seeing the crowd scatter in panic and bodies being thrown into the air is something that will stay with me forever. The noise was sickening, dull thuds that are difficult to describe and impossible to forget. I remember lying on the ground thinking ‘This is it; I’m going to die.'”

Other victims described long-lasting trauma. A 16-year-old boy lost his woodworking apprenticeship because nightmares prevented him from concentrating. A 23-year-old man had to relearn how to walk. One woman reported developing anxiety attacks triggered by Liverpool accents, while another can no longer watch Liverpool matches with her daughter because “the sight of red shirts and the sounds of chants are unbearable reminders of that day.”

When police arrested Doyle, he reportedly said, “I’ve just ruined my family’s life” — a statement that the prosecutor noted fell far short of acknowledging the broader impact of his actions.

Defense attorney Simon Csoka said Doyle was horrified by what he had done and felt ashamed and remorseful. Csoka referenced Doyle’s troubled past in his 20s, which included being discharged from the Marines and a conviction for biting off a sailor’s ear in a drunken fight. However, the attorney emphasized that Doyle had subsequently turned his life around, earned a university degree, established a successful IT career, and raised three children.

Despite the defense claim that Doyle panicked when the crowd pounded on his car and tried to pull him from the vehicle, Judge Menary dismissed this as “demonstrably untrue,” noting that the crowd was reacting to Doyle’s attack, not the other way around.

The defense maintained that while Doyle did not intend to harm anyone when he decided to avoid gridlocked traffic by turning into the crowd, “serious injury was inevitable” once he made that decision.

The case has shocked Liverpool, a city with a passionate soccer culture, where the championship celebration turned to tragedy because of one man’s uncontrolled rage.
