Death Toll Rises to 20 in Colombia Bus Bombing as Violence Escalates in Coca Region

The death toll from a devastating bombing in southwest Colombia has climbed to 20, regional officials confirmed Sunday. The attack, which occurred Saturday when an explosive device detonated on a bus traveling along the Pan-American Highway in Cajibio municipality, has left another 36 people injured.

According to Cauca Governor Octavio Guzmán, the victims include 15 women and five men. Three of the wounded remain in intensive care, while five minors were among those injured but are expected to recover.

Colombia’s Institute of Legal Medicine has deployed specialists including forensic doctors, dentists, and anthropologists to identify the victims, underscoring the severity of the attack.

The bombing marks the latest in a surge of violence that has gripped southwestern Colombia, with more than two dozen similar incidents reported in the region over the past three days alone. General Hugo López, commander of Colombia’s armed forces, described the incident as a “terrorist act” and attributed responsibility to dissidents of the formerly active Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Specifically, authorities have blamed the network led by a man known as “Iván Mordisco” — one of Colombia’s most wanted figures — and the Jaime Martínez faction, both FARC splinter groups operating in the volatile region.

The Cauca region has become a flashpoint for violence as illegal armed groups compete for control of lucrative coca leaf cultivation areas, the raw material for cocaine production. These groups also fight for strategic access to sea and river routes essential for drug trafficking operations to Central America and European markets.

This escalation of violence highlights the ongoing challenges facing Colombia’s security forces in regions where drug trafficking remains a powerful economic driver. Despite the 2016 peace agreement that led to FARC’s demobilization, dissident groups have continued to operate, particularly in remote areas with limited government presence.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the attacks against civilians and called on Colombian authorities to thoroughly investigate the incidents and “guarantee justice for the victims.” The statement reflects growing international concern about the deteriorating security situation in parts of Colombia where drug trafficking and armed groups continue to operate with relative impunity.

In response to the tragedy, Governor Guzmán declared three days of mourning to honor the victims. Images from the scene show grieving relatives paying respects at the bombing site, where the charred remnants of the bus and surrounding vehicles tell the story of the deadly attack.

The bombing occurs against the backdrop of Colombia’s complex struggle with armed groups. Earlier this year, the United States designated Colombia’s Clan del Golfo as a terrorist organization, citing its involvement in narcotics trafficking. The designation reflects the transnational nature of Colombia’s security challenges, which continue to have regional implications.

For residents of Cauca and neighboring regions, the attack represents yet another traumatic event in an area that has experienced decades of conflict related to drug trafficking, political violence, and territorial disputes.
