A Canadian woman was shot and killed Monday at Mexico’s iconic Teotihuacan archaeological site when a gunman opened fire before taking his own life. The incident, which occurred at one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations, left four others wounded by gunfire and two more injured from falls while fleeing the scene.
Among those injured were tourists from Colombia, Russia, and Canada, according to reports from local government officials. Mexican security forces recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and live ammunition from the scene following the attack.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the tragedy on social media, expressing her condolences to the victims and their families. “What happened today in Teotihuacan deeply pains us,” Sheinbaum wrote. “I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families.”
The president confirmed she has instructed Mexico’s Security Cabinet to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to provide all necessary assistance to the victims. Sheinbaum also noted that she is in direct contact with the Canadian Embassy regarding the death of their citizen.
“Personnel from the Secretariat of the Interior and the Secretariat of Culture are already heading to the site to provide assistance and accompaniment, along with local authorities,” she added, promising to provide updates as the situation develops.
Teotihuacan, located approximately 30 miles northeast of Mexico City, stands as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Western Hemisphere. The pre-Hispanic city was once a major cultural and religious center in Mesoamerica, flourishing between the 1st and 7th centuries CE. Its massive Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon, along with the Avenue of the Dead, attract hundreds of thousands of international visitors annually.
The shooting comes at a challenging time for Mexico’s tourism industry, which has been grappling with security concerns in several regions. While archaeological sites have traditionally been considered safe havens for tourists, this incident may raise new questions about security at cultural landmarks throughout the country.
Tourism represents a crucial economic sector for Mexico, contributing approximately 8.5% to the nation’s GDP before the pandemic and employing millions directly and indirectly. Archaeological tourism specifically draws visitors seeking to experience Mexico’s rich pre-Columbian heritage, with Teotihuacan being one of the most prominent destinations.
This incident follows other recent security concerns affecting tourist areas in Mexico. Earlier this year, cartel violence in Puerto Vallarta temporarily trapped tourists in hotels, and ongoing security operations against drug trafficking organizations have periodically disrupted travel in certain regions.
Mexican authorities have worked to contain violence in tourist zones, often deploying additional security forces to popular destinations. However, incidents like the Teotihuacan shooting highlight the challenges facing the country’s tourism security strategy.
The Canadian government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the death of their citizen, though diplomatic channels between Mexico and Canada have been activated to address the situation.
Local authorities have not released information about the gunman’s identity or potential motives. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to understand what prompted the attack at one of Mexico’s most treasured cultural sites.
As the investigation continues, enhanced security measures may be implemented at Teotihuacan and other archaeological sites throughout Mexico to reassure visitors and prevent similar incidents in the future.
