Twin Bombings Rock India and Pakistan, Killing at Least 20 in Capital Cities

A pair of deadly explosions in India and Pakistan have killed at least 20 people, marking a devastating 24-hour period in both nations’ capital cities that threatens to destabilize the fragile peace established earlier this year.

In New Delhi, a car exploded at a traffic signal near the historic Red Fort on Monday evening, killing eight people and injuring 20 others, according to police. The blast occurred near a metro station across from the 17th-century monument in the crowded old quarter of the city. Officials reported that the car’s occupants were presumed dead and nearby vehicles sustained significant damage from the explosion’s impact.

Indian authorities have launched an investigation under the country’s anti-terrorism law, with forensic teams meticulously examining debris for clues. Security measures have been tightened across several Indian states as officials work to determine the cause and identify those responsible.

Just hours after the New Delhi explosion, a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a district court in Islamabad, Pakistan, killing at least 12 people and wounding 27 others. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that the attacker had attempted to enter the courthouse but instead detonated the device beside a police vehicle when confronted. According to The Guardian, the militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban has claimed responsibility for the Islamabad bombing.

The situation in Pakistan deteriorated further that same day when another suicide attack killed three additional people, and militants stormed a military school in the country’s northwest region. No group has claimed responsibility for either of these incidents.

These attacks come at a particularly sensitive time, occurring just months after a hard-won ceasefire between India and Pakistan that the Trump administration helped broker in May 2025. On May 10, President Donald Trump announced that both nations had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following the heaviest cross-border fighting the region had witnessed in decades.

The May agreement had temporarily halted weeks of escalating clashes that had brought the two nuclear-armed neighbors to the brink of a wider conflict. While Pakistan publicly thanked the United States for its diplomatic intervention, Indian officials disputed Trump’s assertion that trade discussions had played a significant role in reaching the agreement.

Although violence largely subsided following the May ceasefire, the arrangement has remained fragile. Indian officials have continued to file complaints regarding alleged violations along the disputed border, according to Reuters, highlighting the tenuous nature of peace between the two countries.
