Cuban officials displayed for the first time on Friday an arsenal of weapons and military equipment they claim was seized from a Florida-flagged speedboat that engaged in a deadly firefight with Cuban border guards earlier this week.

The confrontation, which occurred off Cuba’s northern coast, resulted in the deaths of four suspects and the capture of six others, all reportedly of Cuban origin. The incident has heightened tensions between Cuba and the United States, with Cuban authorities labeling it a “terrorist action.”

According to 1st Col. Ivey Daniel Carballo of the Cuban Border Guard Troops, who spoke with The Associated Press, officers detected an intruder vessel Wednesday morning and approached within approximately 600 feet to investigate. The border patrol was met with high-caliber gunfire, prompting them to return fire.

“We were clearly able to assess that we were facing a terrorist action from a boat coming from the United States,” Carballo told the AP. The commander of the border guard was injured in the exchange, which took place about one mile northeast of Cayo Falcones.

Cuban officials revealed that the seized weapons cache included 12 high-powered firearms, including one equipped with a scope, 11 pistols, and a cooler containing more than 12,800 rounds of ammunition. Military equipment such as heavy-duty boots, helmets with cameras, and camouflage backpacks were also reportedly found on board.

Victor Eduardo Álvarez Valle, a senior official with the Criminal Investigation for State Security at the Ministry of the Interior, expressed surprise at the level of resistance encountered. “We didn’t expect it, especially with that many people and weapons,” he said.

Cuban authorities claim that the suspects have provided information about where and how they acquired the military equipment, the training they received, and who financed the operation. Álvarez noted that officials counted 13 bullet holes on the border guard boat and 21 on the suspects’ vessel, which he cited as evidence of combat.

New details emerged about the suspects’ journey to Cuba. Officials told the AP that the 10 Cuban suspects originally left the United States in two boats, but when one vessel failed, they transferred all supplies to the remaining boat and abandoned the other. Cuban authorities claim the detained suspects revealed these details and emphasized that they “immediately contacted the U.S. Coast Guard” following the incident.

While the Cuban government had initially reported that one person was captured on land, Álvarez stated there is currently no information suggesting the suspects had a support network on the island.

Edward Robert Campbell, Cuba’s chief prosecutor at the Attorney General’s Office, said the six arrested individuals could face terrorism charges, which carry potential sentences of 30 years in prison, life imprisonment, or even the death penalty—though the latter has been under moratorium in Cuba for more than a decade.

The AP was granted access to Cuban military officials and shown the seized items at the headquarters of the former Cuban Institute of Radio and Television before they were displayed to the Cuban public.

The incident comes at a time of persistent tensions between Havana and Washington. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that this was not a U.S. government operation and that American authorities are conducting their own investigation into the matter.

The confrontation represents one of the most serious armed incidents between Cuba and individuals coming from U.S. territory in recent years. Cuban officials’ decision to display the seized materials and provide detailed accounts to international media suggests the government in Havana is eager to present evidence supporting its narrative of the event as an organized attack originating from Florida.

The U.S. and Cuba have a long history of maritime incidents, but direct armed confrontations of this nature have become rare in recent decades. Cuban authorities have not yet provided information about the identity of the deceased suspects or the specific motives behind the alleged incursion.
