In a significant development following the U.S. military operation to capture former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Cuba’s communist party has confirmed that 32 members of its armed forces were killed during the action. The announcement marks a dramatic escalation in tensions between the United States and Cuba, while highlighting the deep military cooperation between Cuba and Venezuela.

According to a statement published in Granma, the official newspaper of Cuba’s Communist Party, the deceased Cuban personnel were carrying out missions at the request of Venezuela’s government. The statement described the incident as “a new criminal act of aggression and state terrorism perpetrated against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States.”

Cuban officials released the names, ranks, and ages of all 32 individuals, who ranged in age from 26 to 60. The group included colonels, lieutenants, majors, captains, and reserve soldiers belonging to Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces and Ministry of the Interior, the nation’s two principal security agencies. The Cuban government has declared two days of official mourning in response to the deaths.

The presence of Cuban military personnel in Venezuela underscores the close alliance between the two nations, which has strengthened over the past two decades. This relationship has been particularly crucial for Cuba’s economy, which has relied heavily on Venezuelan oil subsidies since the early 2000s under agreements first established between former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reacted strongly to the incident, posting on social media platform X that Cubans were “prepared to give their lives” against any U.S. intervention. Rodríguez accused the U.S. president of “showing absolute ignorance about Cuba” and “repeating the agenda of lies of Cuban-American politicians.”

“Our valiant people, true to their history of struggle, will defend their nation against any imperialist aggression,” Rodríguez wrote, adding that President Trump “omits any reference to his criminal policy of economic suffocation and warfare” against Cuba.

The Trump administration has not been shy about acknowledging the Cuban casualties. “You know, a lot of Cubans were killed yesterday,” President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One the Sunday following the operation. “There was a lot of death on the other side. No death on our side.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has been a vocal critic of Cuba’s communist government and is himself the son of Cuban immigrants, emphasized the extent of Cuba’s involvement in Venezuela’s security apparatus, stating that Venezuela’s spy agency was “basically full of Cubans.”

“One of the biggest problems Venezuelans have is they have to declare independence from Cuba,” Rubio remarked during a news conference detailing the military operation. “They tried to basically colonize it from a security standpoint.”

Regional security experts have long noted Cuba’s extensive influence over Venezuela’s military and intelligence services. Cuban advisors have been embedded in Venezuela’s security forces for years, providing training, surveillance expertise, and counterintelligence capabilities to help maintain the Maduro regime’s grip on power.

The deaths of Cuban military personnel during the U.S. operation to capture Maduro raises questions about the future of Cuba-Venezuela relations and potentially destabilizes an already fragile Cuban economy. With Venezuela’s political future uncertain following Maduro’s capture, Cuba may face even greater economic challenges if its preferential access to Venezuelan resources is disrupted.

The incident also complicates U.S.-Cuba relations, which had seen limited diplomatic progress under previous administrations but deteriorated significantly during Trump’s presidency. With tensions now heightened further, prospects for improved relations appear increasingly remote.

This incident highlights the delicate balance of power and influence in the region. The U.S., Cuba, and Venezuela all have strategic interests at play, which increases the risk of miscalculation and unintended escalation.

  2. The details provided raise many questions about the circumstances and justification for this operation. More transparency from all parties involved would be helpful in understanding the full context.

Absolutely. Without a clear and verifiable account of events, it’s difficult to assess the legitimacy of the actions taken. Escalating rhetoric is unlikely to resolve the underlying issues.

  3. Jennifer Jones on

While the loss of life is tragic, it’s important to remember that Cuban forces were reportedly operating in Venezuela at the request of the government. The legality and morality of that arrangement is certainly debatable.

    • Oliver Martin on

That’s a fair point. The involvement of Cuban military personnel in Venezuela is a complex and contentious issue with valid arguments on multiple sides.

  4. Elizabeth Johnson on

This is a tragic and disturbing development. The loss of life is always regrettable, regardless of political affiliations. I hope this incident does not further escalate tensions between the U.S. and Cuba or Venezuela.

    • Michael Williams on

Agreed. Increased military conflict rarely leads to positive outcomes. A diplomatic solution would be preferable, if possible.

  5. Patricia Rodriguez on

I hope cooler heads prevail and that all parties involved can find a way to de-escalate the situation through diplomatic channels. Ongoing military confrontation serves no one’s long-term interests.

    • Linda Johnson on

Well said. Dialogue and negotiation, rather than further aggression, should be the priority moving forward.

  6. As an investor in mining and energy companies, I’m concerned about the potential for this incident to disrupt supply chains or impact market stability in the region. Geopolitical tensions can have far-reaching economic consequences.
