Cuba files terrorism charges against suspects over fatal US boat shooting

Cuban authorities have charged six individuals with terrorism after their alleged involvement in an armed confrontation with Cuban soldiers off the island’s northern coast, according to an announcement made Wednesday by the government in Havana.

The suspects, described as being of Cuban origin, are currently in pretrial detention following what Cuban officials characterize as an attempted armed infiltration of the country. In its statement, Cuba’s Prosecutor’s Office pledged to ensure “due process” while it continues to act “in defense of our people and the country’s institutions.”

According to the Cuban government’s account, the incident involved ten heavily armed Cubans from the United States who approached the island on a Florida-flagged speedboat. Officials claim the group opened fire on Cuban soldiers, who returned fire in the confrontation. Four suspects were reportedly killed during the exchange.

The government presented what it described as evidence seized from the boat, including an arsenal of weapons and ammunition. This cache allegedly contained twelve high-powered weapons, more than 12,800 rounds of ammunition, and eleven pistols, suggesting preparation for significant armed activity.

Chief prosecutor Edward Robert Campbell told The Associated Press that the terrorism charges could result in sentences of up to 30 years imprisonment. While the death penalty technically remains a possible sentence for terrorism in Cuba, Campbell noted that the country has maintained a moratorium on capital punishment since 2003.

The incident occurs against the backdrop of historically tense relations between Cuba and the United States. For decades, the Cuban government has accused U.S.-based exile groups of orchestrating attacks against the island. While such armed incursions were more common in the years immediately following the 1959 Cuban Revolution, the Cuban government continues to cite security threats from Florida-based organizations.
