A rare Fabergé egg, once commissioned for the Russian imperial family, sold for a record-breaking £22.9 million ($30.2 million) at Christie’s London auction house on Tuesday, establishing a new benchmark in the market for Russian decorative arts.

Known as the “Winter Egg,” this masterpiece of craftsmanship stands just 4 inches (10 centimeters) tall and represents an extraordinary feat of artistic innovation. Crafted from rock crystal and adorned with a delicate snowflake pattern created from platinum and approximately 4,500 tiny diamonds, the egg opens to reveal an intricate surprise: a removable basket of bejeweled quartz flowers symbolizing the arrival of spring after the harsh Russian winter.

The sale price, which includes the buyer’s premium, surpasses the previous record of $18.5 million set in 2007 when Christie’s auctioned another Fabergé egg created for the Rothschild banking dynasty. Each time the Winter Egg has appeared at auction, it has established a new world record for Fabergé items.

“This is the ‘Mona Lisa’ of decorative arts,” remarked Margo Oganesian, head of Christie’s Russian art department, highlighting the egg’s exceptional significance in the world of luxury craftsmanship.

The egg’s storied provenance adds to its mystique. Czar Nicholas II commissioned it in 1913 as an Easter present for his mother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. It represents a rare example of Fabergé’s work designed by a woman, Alma Pihl, who created only two imperial eggs during her career. The other Pihl-designed egg now resides in Britain’s royal collection.

Between 1885 and 1917, the House of Fabergé produced more than 50 eggs for the Russian imperial family, each with a unique design and concealing a surprise within. The tradition began when Czar Alexander III presented the first egg to his wife at Easter, a custom his son Nicholas II continued, giving eggs to both his wife and mother.

The imperial family’s connection to these treasures was severed by the 1917 Russian Revolution, which ended the Romanov dynasty’s 300-year rule. Nicholas II and his family were executed the following year as the Bolsheviks consolidated power.

In the 1920s, facing economic challenges, the new Communist government sold off numerous imperial treasures, including this exceptional egg, which a London dealer purchased for just £450. The egg subsequently changed hands several times and was considered lost for nearly two decades until its reappearance at a Christie’s auction in 1994, where it fetched over 7 million Swiss francs (approximately $5.6 million at that time). In 2002, it sold again for $9.6 million.

The extraordinary price achieved in Tuesday’s auction reflects both the egg’s artistic importance and its historical significance. It also demonstrates the enduring fascination with Fabergé’s work and the continued strength of the high-end collectibles market, even amid global economic uncertainties.

Of the original imperial Fabergé eggs, only 43 are known to have survived to the present day. What makes the Winter Egg particularly remarkable is that it represents one of just seven imperial eggs remaining in private hands, with the majority housed in museums worldwide, including Russia’s Kremlin Armoury and the Fabergé Museum in St. Petersburg.

Art market analysts note that objects with such exceptional provenance and craftsmanship have consistently proven to be sound investments, often outperforming traditional financial markets during periods of inflation or economic instability.

The identity of the buyer has not been disclosed, maintaining the tradition of discretion that often surrounds transactions of this magnitude in the art and antiquities market.
