Joshua Hospitalized, Two Associates Killed in Nigerian Road Crash
British boxing star Anthony Joshua is recovering under medical observation following a car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close associates. The crash occurred Monday on a major highway connecting Lagos to Ogun state, adding to growing concerns about road safety in the West African nation.
Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, sustained minor injuries in the collision. His friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, were killed when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck. Ghami served as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was a trainer.
According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps, the accident resulted from “excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.” Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle’s tire burst while traveling at high speed, causing it to crash into a parked truck on the roadside.
Matchroom Boxing, Joshua’s promoter, confirmed the fighter is in “stable condition” but will remain hospitalized for further observation. The tragedy occurred just weeks after Joshua defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on December 19, a bout intended to improve his fitness as he pursues future top-flight boxing titles.
The boxing world has responded with an outpouring of support. British heavyweight Tyson Fury expressed his condolences on Instagram, writing, “This is so sad. May god give them a good bed in heaven.” Chris Eubank Jr., who knew both deceased team members, posted on X: “Thank god our heavyweight champ survived that horrible car crash. And pray for the two fallen soldiers Latz & Sina & their families. I knew both… they were genuinely good men. Rest in Peace boys.”
Former world champion Wladimir Klitschko, who lost to Joshua in a memorable 2017 bout at Wembley Stadium, shared his sympathies: “I’m deeply saddened to hear about AJ and his close-knit group of friends. Having had the pleasure of engaging in an unforgettable battle with AJ, I’ve always regarded him as a true class act who commands my utmost respect.”
Just hours before the crash, Joshua and Ayodele had posted clips on social media playing table tennis together. Tributes to the deceased have begun appearing, with bouquets of flowers placed at the entrance to Evolve Gyms in London, which was owned by Ghami. The gym temporarily closed on Tuesday to mourn its “beloved owner.”
Mustafa Briggs, a friend of Ayodele, remembered him as pure-hearted and sincere. “He had not a bad intention or a bad bone in his body,” Briggs told Sky News. “He loved life, he enjoyed life.”
The high-profile accident has intensified scrutiny of Nigeria’s road safety crisis. The country recorded 5,421 deaths from 9,570 road accidents in 2024, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps—an increase of 340 fatalities compared to 2023.
Road safety experts point to multiple factors contributing to the nation’s dangerous highways: dilapidated infrastructure, inadequate enforcement of traffic laws, and driver behavior. The stationary trucks that frequently line Nigeria’s roads—like the one Joshua’s vehicle struck—are notorious hazards.
“The prevalence of accidents in Nigeria is a serious issue,” said Ache Ogu, CEO of the Road Accident Prevention Network Centre. “Most of the trucks are not in order, and the law enforcement agency needs to step up its efforts.”
For everyday Nigerians, these dangers are a constant reality. Monisola Abosede, a 27-year-old Lagos marketer, has experienced two accidents in December alone. “In Lagos, everyone is in a rush to get somewhere; people are always on the move,” she explained, attributing crashes to heavy traffic combined with poor road conditions.
Joshua, who holds dual British and Nigerian citizenship, was in the country for what appeared to be a personal visit when the tragedy occurred. The boxer has maintained connections to his Nigerian heritage throughout his career, occasionally incorporating it into his public persona and training regimen.
