China Fires Rockets Near Taiwan in Largest Military Exercise Since April
China has launched its largest military encirclement of Taiwan in eight months, firing rockets into waters north of the island during extensive live-fire drills that began Tuesday. The exercises, dubbed “Justice Mission 2025,” come amid escalating tensions following a record U.S. arms sale to Taipei.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command released footage showing forces firing rockets into waters near Taiwan and bomber aircraft taking off at night as part of the military operation. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported that some rockets landed within the island’s 24-nautical-mile zone.
According to Taiwanese officials, approximately 130 PLA aircraft, 14 naval vessels, and eight official ships were operating around the island as of early Tuesday morning. “Ninety of the 130 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern, central, southwestern and eastern air defense identification zone,” the ministry stated, adding that Taiwanese forces were monitoring the situation and responding accordingly.
The comprehensive drills include coordinated deployments of Chinese ground forces, naval vessels, fighter jets, drones, and artillery across seven maritime zones encircling Taiwan. PLA spokesperson Li Xi told state-run Xinhua News that Tuesday’s operations included long-range live-fire exercises in waters north of Taiwan and had achieved their intended results.
Other components of the drills featured assaults on maritime targets, anti-air and anti-submarine operations, with destroyers, frigates, fighter jets, and bombers conducting simulated strikes.
The military exercises represent a significant escalation in China’s pressure campaign against Taiwan. In what Taiwan’s Defense Ministry characterized as psychological warfare, the PLA shared aerial drone footage of Taipei 101, Taiwan’s iconic skyscraper, with the message: “So close, so beautiful, go to Taipei at any time.”
Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te criticized Beijing’s actions, stating that China “has continued to escalate military tension in the region, which is not the behavior of a responsible world power.” He emphasized that “Taiwan will not provoke a confrontation, nor seek conflict with China.”
Regional security experts note that these drills are more extensive than previous operations, with Chinese military aircraft and naval vessels engaging in close stand-offs near Taiwan’s contiguous zone, approximately 24 nautical miles from shore.
“Conducting live-fire exercises around the Taiwan Strait would not only constitute military pressure on us, but could also pose broader risks to the international community and neighboring countries,” warned Hsieh Jih-sheng, Taiwan’s deputy chief of the general staff for intelligence.
In response, Taiwan has placed its military on high alert and announced preparations for rapid-response exercises should the situation escalate further. The island’s defense ministry released video showcasing its military capabilities, including U.S.-made HIMARS systems, while the coast guard deployed large patrol ships to monitor Chinese vessels near Taiwanese waters.
The timing of these drills is particularly significant, occurring just days after U.S. President Donald Trump commented that Chinese President Xi Jinping did not inform him of the exercises, adding that they did not concern him.
China claims Taiwan as its territory and has repeatedly refused to rule out using force to bring the democratically governed island under its control. Taiwan rejects these claims, maintaining that only its people can decide the island’s future.
These military exercises highlight the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, with Taiwan caught between China’s increasing military assertiveness and its own determination to maintain autonomy with U.S. support. Regional observers warn that such large-scale military operations increase the risk of miscalculation and potential conflict in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
