At least 16 people were killed and four others injured when a passenger bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker truck on Indonesia’s Trans-Sumatra Highway Wednesday, leaving both vehicles engulfed in flames.

The crash occurred around midday in North Musi Rawas regency of South Sumatra province, where the intercity bus carrying at least 20 passengers struck an oncoming oil tanker, according to local disaster management official Mugono, who like many Indonesians uses a single name.

Preliminary reports suggest the bus, traveling from Lubuklinggau city to Jambi, may have swerved to avoid a pothole, crossing into the opposite lane and directly into the path of the high-speed tanker truck.

“The forceful impact triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles, leaving many victims trapped inside,” Mugono said.

Among the dead were the bus driver and 13 passengers, along with the tanker’s driver and assistant, all of whom were burned to death. Four bus passengers survived the crash and were taken to a nearby health clinic, with three suffering severe burns.

Rescue operations were complicated by the intensity of the fire and the fact that several victims were pinned inside the burning vehicles. First responders, including disaster officers and traffic police, worked to evacuate victims and clear the wreckage while dealing with significant traffic disruption along the busy highway.

Graphic photos and videos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency showed firefighters battling towering flames and thick plumes of black smoke. The aftermath revealed only charred remains of both vehicles, with twisted metal scattered across the roadway.

Authorities transported sixteen body bags containing victims’ remains to Siti Aisyah Hospital in Lubuk Linggau for identification. North Musi Rawas traffic police chief Muhammad Karim reported Thursday that Disaster Victim Identification teams have confirmed the identities of only five victims so far, including both drivers, two bus crew members, and one passenger.

“All the bodies are severely burned, which has complicated the identification process,” Karim explained. The remains are being processed before transportation to Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Palembang, the provincial capital, for autopsies.

Officials are still working to confirm the total number of casualties, as they continue tracing the passenger manifest to account for everyone aboard the bus.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, though police have revised earlier theories. Initial reports suggested the bus might have emitted sparks before the crash, causing the driver to steer rightward to prevent a more serious incident. However, police investigators now believe the bus simply crossed into the opposite lane while attempting to avoid a pothole in the road.

The deadly crash highlights Indonesia’s persistent road safety challenges. The Southeast Asian nation, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands with Sumatra being the sixth largest island in the world, continues to struggle with poor infrastructure and safety standards across its transportation network.

This tragedy follows just a week after another major transportation disaster near Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, where a long-distance train collided with a stationary commuter train. That accident, which occurred after the commuter train had stopped due to hitting a broken-down taxi on the tracks, killed at least 15 female passengers sitting in the rear car, an area designated for women only.

The Trans-Sumatra Highway is a vital transportation artery on Indonesia’s second-largest island, connecting multiple provinces and serving as an essential route for both passenger travel and commercial transportation. Safety advocates have long pushed for infrastructure improvements and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations throughout the country’s road network.
