Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro Returns to Prison After Surgery

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from DF Star Hospital in Brasilia on Thursday, one week after undergoing double hernia surgery. The 69-year-old former leader was immediately transported back to federal police headquarters where he is serving a 27-year prison sentence for leading an attempted coup following his election defeat in 2022.

Hospital officials confirmed that Bolsonaro’s surgery was completed without complications and that he underwent several minor medical procedures before his release. Brazil’s Supreme Court had temporarily approved his hospital stay for the medical treatment.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over Bolsonaro’s case and issued the prison sentence, rejected the former president’s request for house arrest during his recovery period. Bolsonaro has experienced various health issues since surviving a near-fatal stabbing during his 2018 election campaign, requiring multiple surgeries and treatments in the years since.

The former right-wing leader is being held in isolation at federal police headquarters in Brasilia, with no contact with other inmates. His living conditions include a 12-square-meter (approximately 130-square-foot) room equipped with a bed, private bathroom, air conditioning, television, and desk – accommodations that have drawn both criticism and support from different segments of Brazilian society.

Bolsonaro and several allies were convicted in September by Brazil’s Supreme Court of attempting to overthrow the country’s democratic system following his narrow defeat to leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The coup plot allegedly included plans to assassinate Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice de Moraes, as well as inciting the January 2023 insurrection when thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia.

The former president was found guilty on multiple charges including leading an armed criminal organization and attempting the violent abolition of democratic rule of law. Throughout the proceedings and since his conviction, Bolsonaro has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Despite his imprisonment, Bolsonaro continues to influence Brazilian politics. In December, he named his eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, as his political party’s presidential candidate for the 2026 election, setting up a potential rematch against incumbent President Lula.

Neither Flávio Bolsonaro nor the former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro made public statements about the ex-president’s return to prison following his hospitalization. However, Michelle Bolsonaro expressed support on social media, writing: “There is a Brazil of good people which loves you and prays for you. We will beat the bad days.”

Political analysts note that Bolsonaro’s legal troubles have not diminished his influence among his conservative base. His imprisonment has further polarized Brazilian society, with supporters viewing him as a political prisoner while opponents see his conviction as necessary accountability for threatening Brazil’s democratic institutions.

The case has drawn international attention as part of a broader trend of legal consequences facing populist leaders who challenge election results. Brazil’s political landscape remains deeply divided between Bolsonaro loyalists and supporters of the current Lula administration as the country approaches municipal elections later this year.

Brazilian political scientist Maria Eduarda Santos of the University of Brasilia observes that “Bolsonaro’s medical issues and legal battles have only strengthened his martyr status among supporters, while reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting democratic institutions from potential threats.”

As Brazil continues to process the aftermath of its most significant political crisis in decades, the former president’s health and legal situation remain closely monitored by both domestic and international observers.
