Jewish Community in Sydney Targeted in Deadly Terror Attack Amid Rising Antisemitism

Sunday’s deadly terrorist attack on Australian Jews celebrating Hanukkah in Sydney has sent shockwaves through the country’s small but historic Jewish community, which had feared such violence following a surge in antisemitic incidents since Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as “a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah.” However, critics argue his Labor government has failed to adequately address the alarming rise in antisemitism across Australia.

“Just days after Hamas’ October 7 attack, mobs of Islamic extremists were already openly hunting Jews here in Australia, chanting ‘where’s the Jews’ outside the Sydney Opera House,” Avi Yemini of Rebel News Australia told Fox News Digital. “Since then, synagogues and childcare centers have been firebombed and repeated warnings ignored.”

Yemini added that with “no meaningful government action to confront the problem,” Sunday’s attack in Bondi was “tragically inevitable and is unlikely to be the last.”

Government Response Under Scrutiny

The Albanese government has faced mounting criticism for its handling of antisemitism. Critics point to several contentious policy decisions, including the government’s recognition of a Palestinian state, Labor ministers criticizing the Israeli government while reportedly refusing to visit sites of the October 7 massacres, and the simultaneous appointment of special envoys for both Islamophobia and antisemitism.

When questioned by a reporter about whether his government had taken antisemitism seriously, Albanese defended his administration’s actions, saying, “Yes, we have taken it seriously. And we’ve continued to act. We’ve continued to work with Jewish community leaders. We’ve continued to take all the advice from the security agencies to put in place special measures.”

Yemini suggested political considerations might be influencing the government’s approach: “The Australian Labor government has been unwilling to act decisively, in part because of its political reliance on Islamic community votes.”

Alarming Statistics and Incidents

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) recently documented 1,654 anti-Jewish incidents across Australia between October 2024 and September 2025, following 2,062 incidents the previous year. The ECAJ noted that antisemitic incidents remain at “historically high levels, at almost five times the average annual number before October 7, 2023.”

While there has been a marginal reduction from the previous year’s all-time high, the most serious categories of incidents—including arson attacks against synagogues, pre-schools, and other Jewish institutions—have reached record levels.

Several shocking incidents have occurred in Melbourne and Sydney over the past year. In Melbourne, masked individuals set fire to the Adass Israel Synagogue while congregants were saying morning prayers, causing widespread damage and injuring one worshipper.

In Sydney, both the Allawah Synagogue and Newtown Synagogue were defaced with swastika graffiti. A childcare center near a Jewish school and synagogue suffered major property damage in an arson attack, with antisemitic graffiti found inside. Additionally, a car was set on fire in a Jewish community, and as many as seven homes in the area were vandalized with antisemitic graffiti.

International Response and Concerns

Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s foreign minister, expressed his sorrow to his Australian counterpart Penny Wong. He emphasized that “security for the Jewish community in Australia will be achieved only through a real change in the public atmosphere,” arguing that chants like “Globalize the Intifada” and “From the River to the Sea Palestine Will be Free” are not legitimate forms of free speech and “inevitably lead to what we witnessed today.”

Australian Senator Pauline Hanson criticized Prime Minister Albanese for not heeding “the warning signs, including the weekly antisemitic protests across our nation, hate speech from certain religious clerics, our obnoxious universities and probable terrorist alert.” She emphasized that the Jewish community in Australia has “the same right to live in peace and harmony as all Australians.”

For many in Australia’s Jewish community, which has historically felt safe and integrated into Australian society, recent events have been deeply unsettling. As Yemini noted, “Many Australian Jews are now facing a devastating wake-up call that this country is no longer as safe for us as it once was. I believe many will now be seriously considering a move to Israel.”
