Australian police have shot dead a man believed to be Dezi Freeman, the prime suspect in the killing of two police officers last year, following a tense three-hour standoff on Monday near Thologolong in Victoria state.

The confrontation ended a seven-month manhunt that began after Freeman allegedly opened fire on police officers serving a warrant at his home near Porepunkah, northeast of Melbourne, on August 26. The attack killed two officers and left a third seriously wounded.

“We believe it is Freeman, but we have to go through a formal identification process,” Victoria’s Chief Commissioner of Police Mike Bush told reporters in Melbourne. Officials indicated the formal identification could take up to 48 hours as authorities work through processes including fingerprinting to confirm the man’s identity.

Heavily armed Special Operations Group tactical police surrounded the suspect, who had taken shelter in what was described as a shipping container-like structure. According to Commissioner Bush, the man refused police offers to surrender peacefully during the three-hour negotiation.

“This was all about bringing this to a conclusion as safely as possible. Our ultimate goal was to arrest the person there… as peacefully as possible,” Bush explained. While he “strongly believed” the suspect was armed during the confrontation, Bush could not confirm whether the man had fired at police before officers fatally shot him.

The incident brings a dramatic conclusion to one of Australia’s most intensive manhunts in recent memory. For months, police had combed Victoria’s heavily forested alpine region with no confirmed sightings of Freeman, leading some investigators to speculate he might have taken his own life.

“We have to follow every avenue of inquiry and there was a lot to suggest that Freeman had taken his own life,” Bush acknowledged. However, authorities maintained an active search operation, offering a substantial reward of 1 million Australian dollars ($678,000) for information leading to his capture.

Freeman, 56, was well-known to authorities before the police shootings. A disabled pensioner who had legally changed his surname from Filby, he was associated with the “sovereign citizen” movement—an ideology that rejects the legitimacy of government authority and existing legal frameworks.

His anti-government stance had previously brought him into conflict with the legal system. In 2019, Freeman made headlines for unsuccessfully attempting to perform a citizen’s arrest on a magistrate. Two years later, a court dismissed his bid to prosecute Victoria’s then-premier for treason.

Law enforcement officials had expressed concern about Freeman’s wilderness survival skills, which they feared might have allowed him to remain hidden in remote areas indefinitely. The rugged, densely forested alpine region where he was believed to be hiding presented significant challenges for search teams, with vast stretches of difficult terrain to cover.

Commissioner Bush declined to specify whether Monday’s operation resulted from a tipoff or strategic police work, but confirmed that investigators continue to examine whether Freeman received assistance in evading capture over the past seven months.

The killing of police officers is relatively rare in Australia, where gun laws are stricter than in many other countries, making this case particularly significant for the nation’s law enforcement community. The deaths of the two officers last August sent shockwaves through police ranks across Victoria and prompted one of the largest manhunts in the state’s history.

Monday’s deadly confrontation brings some measure of closure to the case, though formal identification and ongoing investigations into possible accomplices mean the full story of Freeman’s time as a fugitive may still emerge in the coming weeks.
