London Police Hunt Masked Suspects in Synagogue Arson Attempt Classified as Hate Crime

Metropolitan Police in London are searching for two masked individuals who attempted an arson attack on a synagogue in the city’s Finchley neighborhood early Wednesday morning. The incident, which authorities are treating as an “antisemitic hate crime,” has heightened concerns within London’s Jewish community amid a pattern of similar attacks in recent weeks.

According to police reports, the suspects, described as wearing “dark clothing and balaclavas,” approached the Finchley Reform Synagogue shortly after midnight and “threw two bottles, suspected to contain petrol, and a brick at the building.” Fortunately, neither bottle ignited, and no damage or injuries were reported in the incident.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams addressed community concerns in a statement, acknowledging the anxiety this incident would generate, particularly following a similar arson attack last month in the nearby Golders Green area.

“We are aware of the significant concern that this incident will cause in the community, particularly in the wake of the arson attack in Golders Green last month,” Williams said. “I would like to reassure the community that we take incidents of this nature extremely seriously and detectives are working urgently to identify the suspects.”

The attempted attack comes amid growing concerns about antisemitic incidents across the United Kingdom. Just last month, on March 23, four ambulances operated by a volunteer emergency service serving the Jewish community were deliberately set on fire in a synagogue parking lot in Golders Green. British prosecutors recently charged three suspects—ages 17, 19, and 20—in connection with that attack.

These incidents occur against a backdrop of increasing antisemitism in the UK and across Europe. The Community Security Trust, a charity that monitors antisemitism in Britain, reported record levels of antisemitic incidents in 2023, with figures showing a significant spike since October 2023.

Local Jewish community leaders have expressed alarm at the apparent targeting of religious institutions. Security measures have already been increased at synagogues and Jewish community centers across London in recent months.

In response to the latest attack, police have deployed additional officers to the area. “Residents can expect to see a heightened police presence in the area over the coming days. We have brought in additional officers and would urge anyone with concerns to speak to them,” Williams stated.

Law enforcement officials are actively gathering evidence, including CCTV and dash cam footage, to help identify the perpetrators. “If you have any CCTV, dash cam footage or information that could help officers, please contact the police,” Williams urged the public.

The Metropolitan Police have been working closely with synagogue officials and community leaders to address security concerns. Specialized hate crime officers have been assigned to the case, reflecting the seriousness with which authorities are treating the investigation.

While no arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon local time, the investigation remains a high priority for London police, who are coordinating with counterterrorism units to determine if there are any links to other recent antisemitic incidents.

The attack on Finchley Reform Synagogue has drawn condemnation from political leaders and interfaith organizations across London, with many calling for unity and increased vigilance against religious hatred in all forms.
