At least 250 people are feared dead or missing after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals capsized in the Andaman Sea while en route to Malaysia, according to a joint statement from the United Nations refugee and migration agencies.

Nine survivors—three Rohingya and six Bangladeshis—were rescued on April 9 by the Bangladesh flag carrier M.T. Meghna Pride after the crew spotted them floating at sea, Bangladesh Coast Guard spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Sabbir Alam Suzan told The Associated Press.

The vessel reportedly departed from Teknaf in Bangladesh’s southern Cox’s Bazar district, an area that hosts the world’s largest refugee settlement. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the boat sank on April 9 due to overcrowding, strong winds, and rough seas.

One survivor, Rahela Begum, recounted her harrowing experience after being brought to a refugee camp. “I set out for Malaysia on April 4, and about 20 women were on board when the boat sank,” she said. “I drifted in the sea for two days and one night. There were many people on the trawler, but after it sank, I have no idea what happened to them or where they went.”

Begum described losing consciousness after the piece of wood she clung to flipped over. “When I regained consciousness, I saw that Allah had sent a ship. The ship rescued me,” she said.

A Bangladesh Coast Guard official, speaking on condition of anonymity, clarified that the rescue was not part of any official search operation as the area lies outside Bangladeshi territory. The M.T. Meghna Pride crew discovered the survivors while en route to Indonesia from Bangladesh’s Chittagong port.

This tragedy underscores the desperate measures Rohingya refugees are willing to take to escape deteriorating conditions in Bangladesh’s overcrowded camps. According to humanitarian organizations, approximately one million Rohingya Muslims live in these camps after fleeing persecution in neighboring Myanmar, primarily during a military crackdown in 2017 that the United Nations has described as genocide.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the grave risks people continue to face when undertaking dangerous sea journeys in search of safety and better opportunities,” said IOM spokesperson Mohammedali Abunajela. “No one should have to choose between remaining in situations of profound hardship or embarking on a journey that may cost them their lives.”

The UNHCR and IOM attributed the rise in dangerous sea journeys to ongoing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, which continues to make safe return impossible for many refugees. Additionally, limited humanitarian assistance and restricted access to education and employment in the refugee camps push vulnerable individuals to risk these perilous journeys, often based on false promises of higher wages and better opportunities abroad.

The tragedy is part of a disturbing trend. In 2023, more than 6,500 Rohingya refugees embarked on dangerous maritime journeys from Bangladesh and Myanmar, with almost 900 losing their lives, according to IOM data. Deaths and disappearances on the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal specifically increased by more than 40% compared to 2022.

Human trafficking networks operating in Southeast Asia have long exploited the Rohingya’s desperation, charging thousands of dollars per person for passage on overcrowded, unseaworthy vessels bound for Malaysia, Indonesia, or Thailand. These journeys often end in tragedy due to harsh weather conditions, vessel failures, or abandonment by traffickers.

The UNHCR and IOM have urged the international community to strengthen funding and solidarity to ensure continued humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. They also called for increased regional cooperation to combat human trafficking and develop legal migration pathways that might reduce reliance on dangerous smuggling routes.

As search operations remain unclear and information limited, families of those missing continue to await news of their loved ones, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing one of the world’s most persecuted minority groups.
