Russian Missile Strike Kills 10, Including Children, in Ukrainian Residential Building

At least 10 people, including two children, were killed Saturday when a Russian missile struck a five-story residential building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Another 16 people were wounded in the attack, according to local officials.

Emergency workers combed through rubble searching for survivors in the northeastern city. Among the dead were a primary school teacher and her second-grade son, as well as an eighth-grader who died alongside her mother, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed.

Regional prosecutors identified the weapon as a new Russian cruise missile known as “Izdeliye-30.” Ukrainian military analysts report this subsonic air-launched missile has a range of 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) and features advanced satellite navigation systems designed to resist electronic jamming—representing an escalation in Russia’s technological arsenal.

The strike on Kharkiv was part of a larger overnight assault across Ukraine, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reporting that Russia launched 29 missiles and 480 drones targeting energy infrastructure and other facilities. Ukrainian air defense systems managed to intercept 19 missiles and 453 drones, though impacts were recorded at 22 locations across at least seven regions.

“There must be a response from partners to these savage strikes against life,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media platform X. “Russia has not abandoned its attempts to destroy Ukraine’s residential and critical infrastructure, and therefore support must continue.”

In the Kyiv region, debris from intercepted projectiles damaged infrastructure in three districts. The situation in the southern Odesa region was particularly severe, with 80 firefighters deployed to battle large blazes at infrastructure facilities following multiple drone strikes. Ukraine’s state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia announced that damage to rail infrastructure forced route changes in the central and western parts of the country.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the overnight strikes specifically targeted Ukrainian military factories, energy facilities, and air bases, maintaining its position that its attacks focus on military rather than civilian targets.

The assault represents an intensification of Russia’s drone warfare strategy. Over the four years since the invasion began, Russia has fired tens of thousands of Iranian-designed drones at Ukraine. Moscow has since developed domestic production capabilities and can now launch hundreds of drones in a single night—far more than were deployed during entire months earlier in the conflict.

In a development highlighting the global interconnections of the conflict, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine has received a U.S. request for support in defending against Iranian drones in the Middle East. He stated he had ordered equipment and Ukrainian experts to be provided to assist allies dealing with similar drone threats.

The ongoing war in the Middle East has diverted international attention from Europe’s largest conflict since World War II. It has also complicated diplomatic efforts, forcing the postponement of planned U.S.-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine that had been scheduled for this week.

As Russia’s assault on Ukrainian civilian and energy infrastructure continues into its fifth year, international pressure mounts for more robust defensive support. Zelenskyy specifically mentioned expectations for “active work with the European Union to guarantee greater protection for our people,” signaling Ukraine’s continued dependence on Western allies for both military aid and diplomatic backing.

The attack on Kharkiv’s residential building underscores the war’s ongoing toll on civilian populations, with children and educators among those caught in the violence that continues to devastate communities across Ukraine.
