Andrea Bocelli Joins Mariah Carey as Headliner for Milan Cortina Olympics Opening Ceremony

Renowned crossover tenor Andrea Bocelli will join pop diva Mariah Carey as a headline performer for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 6, organizers announced Sunday.

The three-hour spectacle will be centered at Milan’s iconic San Siro soccer stadium, featuring the traditional Parade of Athletes and expected to draw an audience of 60,000 spectators, with millions more watching worldwide. The ceremony is anticipated to be the most widely viewed moment of the Games.

In an unprecedented approach reflecting the Milan Cortina Games’ status as the most geographically dispersed Olympics in history, the opening ceremony will extend beyond a single location. Elements will be broadcast from three additional venues: Cortina in the heart of the Dolomite mountains, Livigno in the Italian Alps, and Predazzo in the autonomous province of Trento. This unique format enables athletes from all disciplines to participate regardless of their competition location.

The ceremony will include a special tribute to the late Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who died in September at 91. Armani’s legacy is deeply intertwined with Milan’s cultural identity through his Armani theater, Silos museum, and sponsorship of the EA7 Emporio Armani Milano basketball team. The designer had a longstanding relationship with the Italian Olympic team, having designed their uniforms for multiple Games.

Bocelli, a classically trained vocalist whose repertoire spans both classical and pop genres, brings significant international prestige to the event. His appearance comes during a break from his world tour, with the tenor scheduled to perform at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, the very next day, followed by six additional U.S. dates.

“Bocelli’s performance will constitute one of the most iconic moments of the event, uniting the spectacle with the essence of Olympic values,” organizers stated, adding that his inclusion will “contribute a contemporary and global tone to the narrative.” His illustrious career includes performing at King Charles III’s coronation and the 75th anniversary of the Italian Constitution in Rome. Bocelli recently released “Duets (30th Anniversary),” a career-spanning album featuring collaborations with artists ranging from Colombian star Karol G to country musician Chris Stapleton, showcasing his versatility across Italian, English, French, and Spanish recordings.

Six-time Grammy winner Mariah Carey, the first international star announced for the ceremony, confirmed her participation earlier with an Instagram post saying, “Ci vediamo a Milano,” Italian for “See you in Milan.” Her inclusion adds significant American star power to the opening festivities.

The ceremony will also feature Italian actors Sabrina Impacciatore, known for her role in the second season of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” and Matilde De Angelis, who starred in the Netflix series “The Law According to Lydia Poet.”

The opening spectacle is being produced by Marco Balich, a veteran who has orchestrated more than a dozen Olympic ceremonies throughout his career. While full details remain under wraps, organizers have been gradually revealing elements of the program in recent months.

The Milan Cortina Winter Olympics will conclude on February 22 with a closing ceremony at Verona’s ancient Roman Arena. That event will feature internationally acclaimed ballet star Roberto Bolle as its headline performer, bringing another dimension of Italian artistic excellence to the Games.

The dual ceremonies bookend what promises to be a Winter Olympics that highlights Italy’s diverse geography, cultural heritage, and artistic contributions to the global stage.
