Italian sports icon Alex Zanardi, who transformed from a championship race car driver to a Paralympic gold medalist after losing both legs in a racing accident, has died at age 59, his family announced Saturday.
Zanardi passed away peacefully on Friday night “surrounded by the affection of those closest to him,” according to the family statement, which did not disclose a cause of death. The announcement comes nearly four years after Zanardi suffered severe facial and cranial trauma in a 2020 handbike accident in Tuscany, when he collided with an oncoming truck during a relay event.
“Italy loses a great champion and an extraordinary man, capable of turning every challenge of life into a lesson in courage, strength, and dignity,” Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said on social media platform X. “He gave all of us much more than a victory: he gave hope, pride, and the strength to never give up.”
Zanardi’s remarkable life story was defined by resilience in the face of devastating setbacks. After winning CART championships in the United States in 1997 and 1998 and a brief return to Formula One, Zanardi’s life changed forever during a 2001 CART race in Germany. The event, held just days after the September 11 terrorist attacks, ended catastrophically when Zanardi was involved in a horrific crash that severed both his legs.
Following the accident, Zanardi was in a coma for three days, with his heart stopping at least once. His friend and fellow driver Max Papis recalled visiting Zanardi in the hospital, where the injured racer demonstrated his characteristic humor by looking at Papis’ new shoes and quipping, “Look at the positive side of this. For a long time I will not have to spend money buying those.”
During recovery, Zanardi designed his own prosthetics and relearned to walk. Rather than retreating from athletic competition, he channeled his competitive spirit into hand cycling, where he achieved extraordinary success. Zanardi won four gold medals and two silvers at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics, competed in the New York City Marathon, and set an Ironman record.
In a poignant full-circle moment, when Zanardi won a Paralympic race in 2012 at Britain’s Brands Hatch circuit—where he had competed as a young driver—he celebrated by holding his bike aloft with one hand as he sat on the track.
“Probably a lot of people watching me doing this to some degree against all odds maybe they are going to say, ‘Bloody hell, if Zanardi did this, I can try. I can try,'” he told The Associated Press at the time.
Zanardi’s indomitable spirit made him beloved in the racing community. When he returned to American competition at the 2019 Rolex 24 of Daytona, racing for BMW without his prosthetics, he was the most revered driver in a field that included Formula One champion Fernando Alonso. Drivers worldwide sought his company and listened intently to his stories.
Not content to give up racing after losing his legs, Zanardi used specially adapted cars with hand controls to compete again, winning races in various series and demonstrating that disability would not define his capabilities.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed profound grief at the loss of his “dear friend,” describing Zanardi as “truly an inspirational person, as a human and as an athlete.”
“He faced challenges that would have stopped anyone, yet he continued to look forward, always with a smile and a stubborn determination that inspired us all,” Domenicali added.
In a somber coincidence, Zanardi’s death came on May 1, the same date that racing legend Ayrton Senna died in a Formula One crash at Imola in 1994.
Following Zanardi’s 2020 crash, Pope Francis had written a handwritten letter of encouragement to Zanardi and his family, praising him as an example of strength amid adversity.
Zanardi is survived by his wife, Daniela, and son, Niccolò. His funeral will be held Tuesday in Padua. The international racing community paid tribute with a moment of silence before Saturday’s Formula One sprint race in Miami Gardens, Florida, while the Italian Olympic Committee called for a minute of silence at all sports events in Italy over the weekend.
