Two Afghan teenage asylum seekers have been sentenced to prison terms after admitting to the rape of a 15-year-old girl in a park in Leamington, Warwickshire, according to local police officials.

Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, both 17, were given sentences of 10 years and eight months, and nine years and 10 months, respectively, during a hearing at Warwick Crown Court on Monday. The judge lifted reporting restrictions that had previously protected their identities due to their age.

The incident occurred on May 10 when the victim was spending time with friends in Leamington and encountered the two teenagers. After striking up a conversation with the girl, the perpetrators invited her to join them for a walk. They then led her to a local park area known as Newbold Comyn, where they carried out the attack.

Following the assault, the traumatized teenager managed to flag down a passerby, who immediately contacted police. Detectives launched an investigation, utilizing CCTV footage from the area and photographs the victim had taken on her phone earlier that day to identify the suspects.

Police were able to quickly identify and arrest both teenagers. They were subsequently charged with rape and appeared before the youth court in Coventry, where they pleaded guilty to the offense.

During sentencing, the court confirmed that both Jahanzeb and Niazal are asylum seekers from Afghanistan. Both will begin their sentences in a Young Offenders’ Institution before being transferred to an adult prison later. Additionally, they have been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and issued indefinite restraining orders.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Hobbs, who led the investigation, commended the victim for her courage. “This was a hugely traumatic incident, and I can’t speak highly enough of the victim for the bravery she has shown,” he said in an official statement released by Warwickshire Police.

The investigation was handled by specially trained officers who provided support to the victim throughout the process. DCI Hobbs noted the deliberate nature of the crime, stating, “Jahanzeb and Niazal went out of their way to befriend the victim with the intention of raping her. The length of their sentence reflects the severity of their crime and the need to protect the public from them.”

The case comes amid ongoing national discussions in the United Kingdom regarding sexual violence and the handling of asylum seekers. In recent years, the UK has faced challenges related to the integration of asylum seekers from conflict zones, including Afghanistan, which has experienced significant political upheaval following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

Sexual assault cases involving asylum seekers have occasionally sparked community tensions and political debates about immigration policies. Last year, the U.S. State Department issued concerns regarding the UK’s handling of certain sexual abuse cases, particularly those involving grooming gangs.

Police officials hope this case sends a clear message to potential perpetrators while encouraging other victims to come forward. DCI Hobbs emphasized that the police force remains committed to supporting survivors of sexual violence.

“We hope this case reassures other victims that they will be listened to and supported if they report offenses,” he added. “We will always investigate thoroughly and sensitively, and do everything in our power to bring offenders to justice.”

The case highlights the critical importance of rapid police response, thorough investigation techniques, and specialized support for victims of sexual violence, particularly when they are minors.
