Three soldiers were killed and one injured on Tuesday when a shell exploded inside a tank during a military exercise at the Hijudai Training Area in southern Japan’s Oita prefecture, defense officials confirmed.

The fatal incident occurred during a routine live-fire exercise involving three Type 10 main battle tanks. According to Masayoshi Arai, chief of staff of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), the explosion took place inside the gun turret, killing the tank commander, gunner, and safety officer instantly. The tank driver survived the blast but sustained injuries.

“We will promptly determine the cause so that we can take preventive measures,” Arai told reporters at a press conference following the incident. As an immediate precaution, the JGSDF has suspended all live-fire exercises involving Type 10 and Type 90 tanks, which use the same type of ammunition.

The Type 10 tank involved in the incident represents Japan’s most advanced armored fighting vehicle, having entered service in 2011 as part of Japan’s modernization efforts for its ground forces. Weighing approximately 44 tons, the Type 10 was designed to be more maneuverable than its predecessors while maintaining substantial firepower through its 120mm smoothbore main gun.

Military analysts note that tank ammunition accidents, while rare, can have catastrophic consequences due to the confined space inside tank turrets. Potential causes typically range from manufacturing defects in the shells to improper handling or storage of ammunition.

This incident comes at a sensitive time for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, which have been undergoing significant transformation in recent years. Japan has steadily increased its defense spending amid growing regional tensions, particularly concerning North Korea’s missile program and China’s expanding military presence in the East China Sea.

The JGSDF, which operates approximately 100 Type 10 tanks alongside older Type 90 models, has maintained a strong safety record historically. This makes Tuesday’s accident particularly concerning for military leadership.

Defense Ministry officials indicated that a thorough investigation will be conducted, including metallurgical analysis of the ammunition and inspection of the tank’s fire control systems. The investigation team will also review training protocols and safety procedures currently in place for live-fire exercises.

The Hijudai Training Area, located in Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, spans over 20,000 hectares and serves as one of the country’s primary ground forces training facilities. The remote location helps minimize civilian exposure to military operations but also presents challenges for emergency response in case of accidents.

Military training accidents have occasionally made headlines in Japan, raising questions about equipment maintenance and safety protocols. In 2017, a Ground Self-Defense Force helicopter crashed in residential areas in Saga Prefecture, killing both crew members.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers and pledged full government support for the investigation. “These brave service members lost their lives while training to defend our nation. We will ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent such tragedies in the future,” Kishida said in a statement.

The names of the deceased and injured soldiers have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.

Defense experts suggest that the findings from this investigation could potentially impact Japan’s tank program and ammunition procurement strategies, particularly as the country continues to modernize its armed forces in response to the evolving security environment in East Asia.

  1. Suspending live-fire exercises with the Type 10 and Type 90 tanks until the cause is identified seems like a prudent precaution. Safety should always come first, especially in high-risk military training scenarios.

  2. The Type 10 tank is Japan’s most advanced armored vehicle, so this incident raises concerns about potential design or maintenance issues. Hopefully the JGSDF can quickly determine the root cause and make necessary improvements.

Good point. With the tank being a relatively new model, it’s important they get to the bottom of what went wrong to uphold the safety standards for this critical military asset.

  3. Tragic accident during the army drill. My condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers. Safety should be the top priority in military exercises, and it’s good to hear the JGSDF is investigating the cause to prevent future incidents.

You’re right, the loss of life is heartbreaking. Thorough investigation and implementing appropriate safety measures are crucial to ensure the wellbeing of personnel during training.
