A nightclub bombing in Peru’s coastal city of Trujillo has injured 33 people, including three teenagers, as violence continues to escalate in a region increasingly plagued by organized crime and extortion.

The explosion occurred during the early morning hours at the Dali nightclub in Trujillo, a city in Peru’s northern La Libertad region, according to a statement from the local Emergency Operations Center. Authorities have not yet identified those responsible or established a clear motive for the attack.

Gerardo Florián Gómez, executive director of the Trujillo Health Network, confirmed that at least five of the injured are in serious condition. Some victims suffered amputations and shrapnel wounds requiring emergency surgery. Among the injured were three minors—one 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds.

Fiorella Mantilla, who was inside the nightclub when the bombing occurred, described the moment of the explosion to reporters, saying, “It sounded as if the sound system had suddenly been turned off.” She reported having glass fragments embedded in her legs from the blast.

This bombing represents just the latest incident in a troubling pattern of violence that has intensified throughout the La Libertad region. Less than a month ago, another explosion in Trujillo damaged 25 homes, though no injuries were reported in that case.

The La Libertad region, which encompasses both coastal areas like Trujillo and mountainous Andean territories, has become a hotspot for criminal activity. The region’s Andean highlands contain Peru’s most productive gold mining areas, making it strategically important for both legitimate business and criminal enterprises.

The scale of violence has been escalating dramatically. According to official statistics, La Libertad experienced 286 explosions throughout 2025 alone, with nearly half of those—136 incidents—occurring specifically in Trujillo. The frequency of these attacks points to systematic criminal activity rather than isolated incidents.

Security experts believe these bombings are connected to sophisticated extortion schemes run by organized crime syndicates. In January 2025, attackers targeted a prosecutor’s office building in Trujillo with an explosive device, in what appeared to be a direct challenge to law enforcement authorities. Additional explosions in August and September damaged dozens of homes and injured more than 20 people.

Peruvian authorities have identified criminal organizations like Los Pulpos (The Octopuses) as being behind much of the violence. This group has expanded beyond Peru’s borders, extending its criminal operations into Chile and other neighboring countries in recent years.

The prevalence of extortion in the region has created significant challenges for local businesses, with many owners reporting demands for “protection payments” from criminal groups. Those who refuse often face violent repercussions, including property damage, personal attacks, or bombings like the one at the Dali nightclub.

The situation in Trujillo reflects broader security challenges throughout Peru, where the government has struggled to contain the growth of organized crime in several regions. The combination of valuable natural resources, particularly gold mining operations, alongside limited state presence in some areas has created fertile ground for criminal enterprises.

Local officials have called for increased federal support to address the security crisis, including additional police resources and specialized units to investigate bombing incidents. Community leaders have also pushed for greater economic development programs to provide alternatives to criminal activity for young people in the region.

As investigators continue to examine evidence from the Dali nightclub bombing, residents of Trujillo remain on edge, wondering when and where the next attack might occur in their increasingly volatile city.
