Former Student Opens Fire at Turkish Vocational School, Injures 16 Before Taking Own Life
A shooting at a vocational high school in southeastern Turkey left 16 people wounded on Tuesday when an 18-year-old former student opened fire before turning the weapon on himself, according to local officials.
The attack occurred in Siverek, a town in Sanliurfa province, when the assailant entered the school armed with a shotgun and began firing randomly inside the building. According to Governor Hasan Sildak, the gunman was eventually “cornered by police” before taking his own life with the same weapon.
Among the wounded were 10 students, four teachers, a canteen employee, and a police officer. While most victims received treatment at local medical facilities in Siverek, five individuals—teachers and students with more serious injuries—were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital.
“The individual was cornered inside the building through police intervention and died after shooting himself,” Sildak told reporters at the scene. He added that authorities would conduct a “comprehensive” investigation into the incident.
Eyewitness accounts described moments of terror as the attack unfolded. One student, Omer Furkan Sayar, told the state-run Anadolu Agency that he and a classmate escaped by jumping out of a window.
“He suddenly entered the classroom and fired. He fired four or five times. Two people were hit. He then went into the next classroom,” Sayar recounted. “We first threw ourselves to the ground and then two of us jumped out of the window.” The student emphasized the attacker’s silence during the rampage, stating, “He didn’t say anything, he entered and started to shoot directly.”
Turkish media outlets reported that special police operations units had been deployed to the scene after initial reports of the shooting. Video footage that circulated online showed dozens of students fleeing the school grounds in panic, running toward the gate and into the street.
While authorities have not yet established a clear motive for the attack, Turkish news channel NTV and other media outlets reported that the assailant had posted threats against the school on social media prior to carrying out the shooting.
Governor Sildak noted that the attacker did not have a prior criminal record. He also mentioned that the school had previously been evaluated as safe and did not have a permanent police officer assigned for security, describing the shooting as an “isolated incident.”
The attack stands out in Turkey, where school shootings remain relatively uncommon compared to countries like the United States. The incident has raised questions about school security measures in the country and whether social media threats should trigger more immediate preventative actions.
Turkey’s education system has faced various challenges in recent years, including infrastructure issues and calls for improved safety protocols, particularly in rural and southeastern regions. This attack may prompt renewed discussion about security procedures in educational institutions across the country.
Local authorities have not released the identity of the attacker, though they confirmed he was a former student of the institution. As the investigation continues, the community in Siverek is left grappling with the psychological impact of violence in what should be a safe learning environment.
The Turkish Ministry of Education has not yet issued a formal statement regarding potential security reforms in the wake of this incident, though such measures are typically considered following violent events in educational settings.
