A fire tore through a popular nightclub in India’s coastal state of Goa early Sunday morning, killing 25 people and injuring six others in what officials are calling a preventable tragedy caused by safety violations.

The blaze erupted just after midnight at a nightclub in Arpora village, a well-known party destination approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) from Goa’s capital city of Panaji. According to Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, most of the victims were kitchen staff, though three to four tourists also perished in the fire.

While the Press Trust of India initially reported that a gas cylinder explosion triggered the blaze, eyewitness accounts suggest the fire may have started on the club’s first floor, where approximately 100 tourists were dancing. As panic spread, many patrons rushed downstairs toward the kitchen area, where they became trapped alongside staff members.

“We rushed out of the club only to see that the entire structure was up in flames,” said Fatima Shaikh, who was present when the fire broke out.

Emergency response efforts faced significant challenges due to the club’s location and design. The venue, situated along the Arpora River backwaters, had a narrow entrance and exit, forcing firefighters to park their vehicles about 400 meters (1,300 feet) away. This delay complicated rescue operations during the critical early moments of the fire.

Chief Minister Sawant confirmed that all bodies have been recovered, and the six injured survivors are in stable condition. He also acknowledged that the nightclub had been operating in violation of fire safety regulations, prompting the state government to order an investigation into the cause and responsibility.

“The state government will take action against those responsible, including the club management and officials who allowed it to operate despite these violations,” Sawant stated.

Further complicating matters, local village council official Roshan Redkar revealed that authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the establishment, which reportedly lacked proper construction permits. However, according to Redkar, higher officials had rescinded this order, allowing the club to continue operating despite safety concerns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, calling the incident “deeply saddening” and confirming that he had spoken with Chief Minister Sawant about the tragedy. “The government is providing all possible assistance,” Modi wrote, offering sympathies to the victims’ families.

The opposition was quick to condemn what they viewed as regulatory failures. Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of India’s main opposition Congress party, characterized the incident as “not just an accident” but “a criminal failure of safety and governance” in a social media post. Gandhi called for a transparent investigation to “fix accountability and ensure such preventable tragedies don’t occur again.”

This deadly fire highlights an ongoing pattern of safety concerns across India, where accidents involving gas cylinders and electrical shorts are not uncommon. These incidents regularly result in casualties, underscoring the critical need for stricter enforcement of safety protocols and building regulations.

Goa, a small western coastal state and former Portuguese colony, has developed into one of India’s premier tourist destinations, known for its beaches, nightlife, and relaxed atmosphere. The state attracts millions of domestic and international visitors annually, with tourism serving as the backbone of its economy. This tragedy occurs during what would typically be a busy season for the region’s hospitality industry.

Local authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims as they continue their investigation into this devastating incident.
