False Wind Energy Claims Pose Major Threat to Europe’s Energy Security
A groundbreaking report released today by CASM Technology and WindEurope reveals that disinformation and misinformation about wind energy have evolved into a systemic threat to Europe’s security, economic competitiveness, and decision-making capacity. This first-of-its-kind analysis documents how misleading claims circulating on social media platforms are directly linked to real-world delays and cancellations of wind energy projects across the continent at a critical time when Europe urgently requires more locally produced, affordable electricity.
The timing of this investigation is particularly relevant as Europe continues to struggle with energy security concerns and volatility in fossil fuel markets. Despite broad public support for the transition to renewable energy, the report identifies a well-organized ecosystem of actors actively undermining wind energy development through coordinated disinformation campaigns.
“At a time when Europe faces another fossil energy crisis, wind power is both an economic benefit and a pillar of security,” said European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen. He emphasized that the European Commission is actively countering these false narratives through targeted information campaigns, calling for public debate to be “grounded in facts rather than fiction.”
WindEurope CEO Tinne van der Straeten highlighted the concrete economic impact of these disinformation campaigns. “This is far more than a social media phenomenon,” she noted. “Projects worth billions of euros across Europe have been halted or canceled, often after protests and campaigns based on false claims.” The consequence, according to van der Straeten, is a slower transition to domestically produced renewable energy and higher electricity prices for consumers.
The detailed analysis, conducted in collaboration with UK-based think tank CASM Technology, examined anti-wind posts across multiple social media platforms over an 18-month period. The research uncovered a sophisticated network generating more than 40,000 posts that produced 6.3 million active engagements and tens of millions of views.
CASM Technology founder Carl Miller described the findings as revealing “a large and well-organized ecosystem of actors actively undermining Europe’s energy discourse.” This network includes professional anti-wind groups, individual activists, media outlets, and predominantly right-wing politicians who repeatedly promote myths about alleged negative health, environmental, and economic effects of wind energy.
The problem extends well beyond social media echo chambers. The report documents how false claims about wind energy have penetrated mainstream media coverage in multiple European countries. Non-governmental organizations QuotaClimat, Science Feedback, and Data for Good have tracked this troubling trend across France, Spain, Poland, and Brazil.
“Climate mis- and disinformation is now permeating mainstream media, normalizing these narratives,” said QuotaClimat Secretary General Eva Morel. Their research across four countries identified 815 cases of climate misinformation, with nearly half specifically targeting renewable energy. This indicates that renewable technologies have become the central focus of climate disinformation strategies.
The financial stakes are enormous. According to the report, failure to build an energy system based on renewables with a high share of wind energy could cost Europe up to €1.6 trillion by 2050. This figure underscores the long-term economic impact of allowing misinformation to derail the continent’s renewable energy transition.
The wind industry has responded to these challenges with the Madrid Call to Action – a set of ten specific measures aimed at boosting Europe’s energy independence. However, the report makes clear that without addressing the coordinated spread of misinformation, achieving these goals will be significantly more difficult.
As Europe continues to navigate complex geopolitical energy challenges, the battle against wind energy disinformation represents a critical front in securing the continent’s energy future. The report serves as a wake-up call for policymakers, media organizations, and the public to recognize how online disinformation translates into real-world consequences for energy security and economic stability.
